About this course

This qualification is designed for learners interested in using counselling skills as part of their role in a wide range of sector areas, or looking to progress towards accredited counsellor status with one of the counselling professional accrediting bodies.

This qualification aims to provide learners with more in-depth knowledge of the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and the approaches that underpin the use of these skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners develop counselling skills, understand the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills and appreciate the importance of self-development.

Course Content

Unit 1 – Developing counselling skills

In this unit you will learn how to develop your counselling skills and approach. You will focus on how to establish a working relationship with your client and how to reflect on your own skills to evaluate your strengths and where you could improve.

Unit 2 – Theoretical approaches in the use of counselling skills

In this unit you will learn about three counselling theories and evaluate the characteristics and concepts of them. You will then gain an understanding of yourself and how to apply these theories to your sessions.

Unit 3 – Working ethically with counselling skills

In your third unit you will focus on the ethical framework and how this is relevant to counselling skills and the requirements. This unit also details confidentiality and why it is important so that boundaries aren’t breached.

Unit 4 – Counselling skills and diversity

This unit goes into details of discrimination and reflect on instances where you have experienced difference and diversity. You will also learn in this unit about the legal aspect of discrimination and ensuring anti-discriminatory practice.

Unit 5 – Counselling skills and personal development

This unit will teach you how to detect your own personal development needs and why continued self-development is a vital part of counselling skills.

Practical skills and reflection

The final part of your course will be to conduct a practical counselling session. After the session you will need to reflect on this and analyse the session to be able to work on your counselling skills to improve for further sessions.
