Apprentice Fire and Security Design Engineer

 What you will do:   

  • You will join the design department that specializes in creating fire and security systems for industrial, commercial, and residential markets.
  • An experienced design engineer will guide you, teaching you the fundamentals of design engineering.
  • You will familiarize yourself with tools like AutoCAD, Revit 3D modelling, and other design-specific software to gain direct experience in system design.
  • This apprenticeship is a highly technical role where you'll create detailed designs and calculations for various fire and security systems, complying with industry and legislative standards.
  • You will visit client locations, collaborate with colleagues to conduct surveys, and develop design plans based on the gathered information.
  • You will be registered in a level 3 Engineering Design and Draughts-person program, receiving on-the-job instruction from experienced mentors and engineers.
  • This role will require travel to clients on a national basis occasionally. The company will cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals.
  • The apprenticeship combines work experience with college education, aiming for a project controls apprenticeship. Experienced design engineers will closely supervise your on-the-job training, many of whom have also undergone our apprenticeship scheme and can help you navigate through the process.

How you will do it:  

  • On-the-Job Work Experience: You'll spend significant time at our client sites, where you will get the opportunity to put into practice skills learned at college in a real world setting.
  • Collaboration with Qualified Engineers: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll work closely with qualified Johnson Controls Engineers who will serve as mentors, guiding you in developing your design skills. This collaborative environment ensures that you receive the support and guidance needed to succeed in your role.
  • You will be enrolled on a level 3 Engineering Design and Draughtsperson Apprenticeship that you will study alongside your new role. You’ll enjoy the full support of your mentor and our dedicated apprentice training team.
  • Opportunities for Growth: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll have the opportunity to grow and apply the skills and knowledge gained in college in a real workplace setting. This experiential learning approach ensures that you develop both technical competencies and practical skills essential for success in the world of design engineering.

Training and Qualifications:

  • You will be enrolled on a Engineering Design and Draughts-person Level 3 Apprenticeship ran by our training partners Train’d up.
  • Travel and Accommodation: If you're required to stay away from home for college or work-related purposes, the company will cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals. This ensures that you can focus on your education and training without financial burden.

Career Progression:

  • Upon completion, a number of internal engineering opportunities within the company will be available to you. All of our apprentices immediately move into full time permanent positions.

Qualifications Required:

  • GCSE or equivalent in English (Grade 5)
  • GCSE or equivalent in Math’s (Grade 5)
  • Full Driving License is essential.

What happens next?

  • Suitable candidates will have a screening call with a recruiter to discuss the position and provide necessary documentation. Afterward, you will be invited to an assessment center in May, assessment centers typically include a combination of activities such as group problem-solving tasks, individual interviews, and presentations.
  • Within 48 hours of the assessment center, candidates will receive a response regarding the outcome of their application. If successful, they can begin the apprenticeship on September 2, 2024.
