This qualification replaces the level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Dtlls). The programme is designed to prepare trainee teachers and trainers to teach in various contexts. If you have already completed levels 3 and 4, this diploma provides the ideal opportunity to enhance your skills as a trainee teacher. DTLLS Online Training Course

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training online course, previously known as a DTLLS online course (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector), is suitable for individuals already working in teaching, training, or tutoring.

Study Hours

The approximate study period for this qualification is 1200 hours. You can pace your learning to suit your lifestyle. Typically, learners complete this qualification within 9-12 months, although some may finish sooner.

This course is offered at level 5, focusing on theoretical understanding, critical analysis, specific referencing, and detailed reflection and evaluation. It will help you develop more effective classroom techniques and enable you to select suitable techniques and resources for adult education classes. Holders of a Level 4 Certificate in Education will only need to provide evidence of up to 70 hours. To gain the qualification, a minimum of 120 credits is required, including a minimum of 61 credits at level. The course covers description, explanation, evaluation, and referencing.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed through various methods to support your progress:

  • 8 observations of your teaching sessions with groups (minimum of 5 students). These observations are usually conducted by another experienced teacher acting as an expert witness.
  • A minimum of 100 hours of classroom teaching experience. You will need to maintain a teaching hours log.
  • Assignments for each of the seven units in this qualification. The assignments range from 1000 to 2000 words and may require additional evidence such as lesson plans, teaching resources, and related paperwork.
  • Personal statements and a record of your ongoing personal development.

Course Duration

You have up to 12 months to complete the required hours for this course. Most learners finish the course within 9-12 months, but the duration can vary depending on individual circumstances.

Course Type

This is a distance learning course. You will receive access to an online portal containing reading materials and a reading list. You can upload your completed assignments, and tutor feedback will be provided through the portal as well.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. However, some employers may require learners to undergo a background check by the Disclosure and Barring Service if they plan to work with young people or vulnerable adults. It is your responsibility to seek advice from your employer regarding this matter.

Learners must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Adequate reading and communication skills to meet the training requirements.
  • No criminal background that prohibits working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults.
  • Hold a relevant qualification at a level higher than that of their learners, preferably at least Level 3 in their area of specialisation.

How quickly can I complete the DET?

The course takes approximately 1200 hours to complete. You can divide these hours as you wish over a 12-month period. Whether you spread your learning across all twelve months or complete it in a shorter time frame is entirely up to you.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through written assignments based on the course units and 8 observations of your teaching. Additionally, you will need to provide a log of at least 100 hours of completed teaching.

Do my lessons need to be delivered in a physical classroom?

The Level 5 teaching qualification requires you to be observed delivering teaching in an actual classroom. Virtual evidence is not permitted.

Who will conduct the observations for this course?

You will need to find an expert witness to observe your teaching sessions. This person should hold a level 5 Diploma in Education or an equivalent teaching degree.

What support materials do you provide?

The course includes several written documents to guide your learning. You are also expected to conduct additional reading and research to provide comprehensive answers to your assignment questions.

What happens if I fail an assessment?

Your tutor will provide detailed feedback, and you can submit an amended version based on this feedback.
