Description
Microbiology is the scientific study of all organisms that are unable to be seen with the naked eye. This includes bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi, protists, and some microscopic algae. Also known as ‘microbes’, these organisms are crucial in many of the planet’s vital processes, such as nutrient cycling, photosynthesis, biogeochemical cycles, biodegradation, amongst others.
The Microbiology Diploma Course introduces you to these microorganisms, how they are studied and classified, and the difference they are making to current global challenges.
Beginning with an introduction, the Microbiology Diploma Course explains the basics of the subject, its main subfields and interrelationship with other areas, and the main roles and responsibilities of a microbiologist.
You’ll learn about the traditional and modern microbiological techniques, methods, and equipment used to study microorganisms, and how they are classified into one of six main groups of microorganism: bacteria, archaea, viruses, protozoa, fungi, and algae.
We’ll then take a microscope to each of these groups of microorganisms to discover their morphology, distribution, the roles they play and the impact they each have on Earth’s inhabitants.
The course takes us through the natural and experimental evolutionary processes of microbial organisms, the importance of microbiology in the field of environmental science, the most recent advancements in microbiology, and the most useful and practical applications of microorganisms.
By studying this course, you will:
- Understand the basics of microbiology and the role of a microbiologist
- Discover how microorganisms are classified
- Become familiar with the six main groups of microorganism
- Learn about the importance of microorganisms
- Explore recent advancements in microbiology
