R&D Technician/Chemist

Location: South Wales

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Reed Scientific are working in partnership with a leading personal care products manufacturer in South Wales who are seeking an R&D Technician to join their innovative team. The role involves assisting with the research and development of new products, ensuring all aspects of design, formulation, and manufacturing are safe and accurate. This position is ideal for a candidate with a strong background in Chemistry or a related technical discipline, who is keen to contribute to the development of cutting-edge products.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Independently manage Product Development projects from inception to commercialisation, adhering to deadlines with support from the R&D team.
  • Provide functional support to the R&D Department in a fast-paced development and manufacturing environment.
  • Support key clients and collaborate with Raw Materials suppliers for products within the portfolio.
  • Ensure compliance with Global & EU Cosmetic Regulations and Aerosol Directive, covering all legal and technical requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records throughout the product life-cycle.
  • Act as R&D/Formulation and Processing Work Stream Leader for cross-functional projects, working closely with Sales/Marketing, Production & Engineering, Quality & Occupational Health/Safety.
  • Manage Validation works, including Stability Tests, User trials, Challenge tests, and Product Assessments.
  • Assist in the transfer of new products from lab scale to full scale batch size.
  • Provide costings for new product development within departmental budget requirements.
  • Manage activities safely based on comprehensive risk assessment and SOPs.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant quality and HSE standards.
  • Develop new test methods and requirements in collaboration with QA and QC departments.
  • Support technical investigations and CAPA actions linked to process/formulation non-conformances.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • BSc or equivalent in Chemistry or a similar technical discipline.
  • Formulation experience.
  • Strong numerical skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude to meet deadlines and work schedules.
  • Ability to think logically and analyse problems systematically.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at various levels within the business.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Experience handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Customer-focused approach for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Office 365, especially Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Hair, Skin Care Technology/Science is advantageous.
  • Formulation and/or Process Development experience in Cosmetic & Personal Care industry is desirable.
