A rail infrastructure company who serve millions of passengers and freight users throughout the UK every day, their work is crucial to the efficient running of the country's economy. They are looking for an Ecologists to service the Wales & Western region which includes more than 2,700 miles of railway across Wales, the Thames Valley, West of England, and the Southwest Peninsula.Their Ecology team lead the development of appropriate mitigation strategies with regular collaboration with in-house environmental specialist's and the arboriculture team.

Your new role

You will provide ecological expertise to the Shrewsbury Delivery Unit (Wales and West), reporting directly to the Off-Track Maintenance Engineer. Biodiversity enhancements to lineside vegetation involves supervision of works as an ecological clerk of works.Main duties include:

  • Ecological field surveys, including protected species surveys and extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys
  • Collate, write up and review survey results
  • Manage the implementation of recommendations
  • Complete environmental impact assessments
  • Assist in the production of environmental appraisal reports.
  • Work alongside the vegetation management and drainage maintenance teams
  • Undertake and lead on fieldwork (travel required)
  • Analyse and interpret data to produce ecological reports
  • Identify constraints and mitigation
  • Be involved with habitat management work
  • Provide specialist ecological advice and guidance to colleagues, site managers, engineers and planners
  • Stakeholder liaising (statutory bodies, local authorities, and the public)



What you'll need to succeed

  • Extensive experience working in ecology
  • A relevant degree in Ecology, Zoology, Biological Sciences, or other relevant Environmental Sciences field
  • A good understanding of UK and European wildlife legislation
  • Strong report writing skills, including experience of writing method statements and survey reports
  • excellent communication skills
  • Project management skills
  • A full driving licence is essential
  • Holder of a protected species survey licence such as dormice, bats, great crested newts (desired)
  • Experience with railway or other linear infrastructure projects (desired)
  • Membership of CIEEM (desired)
  • Botanical skills to a Level 4 FISC (desired)
