This course is divided into ten key units covering core biological concepts:

- Classification and Biodiversity – Evolutionary relationships and conservation biology
- Exchange and Transport – Circulatory and respiratory systems in animals and plants
- Energy for Biological Processes – Photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and energy flow
- Microbiology and Pathogens – Immune response, infection, and antibiotic resistance
- Modern Genetics – DNA structure, gene expression, and biotechnological applications
- Origins of Genetic Variation – Mutation, inheritance, and natural selection
- Control Systems – Nervous system, homeostasis, and hormonal control
- Ecosystems – Population dynamics, sustainability, and environmental impacts

- Paper 3: 2 hours 30 minutes, 40% of A-Level – General and Practical Principles in Biology
Exams contain multiple-choice, structured, and extended open-response questions.

Some university courses, such as medicine and veterinary science, require a practical endorsement. This involves completing 12 practical activities, which will be recorded as a separate qualification on your certificate.
