Physics stands as a captivating and indispensable discipline, delving into the intricate dynamics that govern the natural world across time and space. From the electrifying currents coursing through circuits to the celestial bodies that dot the vast expanse of the universe, physics encapsulates the essence of existence itself. Through this course, students embark on a journey of discovery, gaining invaluable insights into the fundamental principles that underpin the universe and acquiring a profound understanding of the myriad interactions shaping the world around them.

At its core, physics unravels the mysteries of the universe, offering a lens through which students can explore the inner workings of matter, energy, and forces. By delving into topics such as electricity, magnetism, gravity, and motion, students gain a deeper appreciation for the underlying principles governing natural phenomena. Moreover, the study of physics fosters critical thinking skills and analytical reasoning, empowering students to decipher complex problems and unravel the intricacies of the physical world through logical deduction and scientific inquiry.

Through this course, students not only expand their theoretical knowledge but also cultivate practical skills through hands-on experimentation and exploration. From conducting laboratory experiments to analysing real-world phenomena, students engage in a dynamic learning experience that bridges theory with application. By immersing themselves in practical exercises and laboratory work, students develop a keen intuition for scientific inquiry and gain invaluable insights into the practical applications of physics in various fields, from engineering to astrophysics.

Furthermore, the study of physics opens doors to a myriad of opportunities in academia, research, and industry. With its interdisciplinary nature and wide-ranging applications, a background in physics equips students with versatile skills that are highly sought after by universities and employers alike. Whether pursuing further studies in physics or venturing into diverse fields such as engineering, medicine, or renewable energy, students armed with a solid foundation in physics are poised to make meaningful contributions to society and tackle the complex challenges of the modern world. Thus, the A-level Physics course serves as a gateway to a world of discovery, offering students the tools and knowledge they need to unravel the mysteries of the universe and embark on a journey of scientific exploration and innovation.

Most of our A-Level courses are evaluated through written exam papers, while subjects like English Language, English Literature, and History may include coursework, known as non-exam assessment (NEA), which is assessed and moderated by our tutors.

Examinations are held annually in the summer, with no winter examination sessions available.

Our A Level Accounting programmes are eligible for UCAS points, making them a great choice for students aiming to progress to University. UCAS points are awarded according to the grade earned, please see below for details.

A levels are also widely recognised by employers and are useful for students looking to progress their careers or meet requirements for promotion.

Description

Course Key Topics

the A-Level Physics AQA course is divided into 3 modules.

Module 1: Core Content

  • Measurements and their errors
  • Particles and radiation
  • Waves

This first module starts the course by covering some basic general concepts that you will take with you and develop through your studies. The first topic is concerned with measurements and the correct use of SI modules. We also introduce the concept of error in any given measurement and discover how to calculate this property. We then look at the atom and discover atomic models and the makeup of atoms, and how different forms of radiation are the result of different particle behaviour. Finally, we look at waves including the different types of wave, their properties and how they behave.

Module 2: Core content

  • Mechanics and materials
  • Electricity

The second module consists of more core content and is focused on the transference of energy, forces and momentum and how these three are intrinsically linked. We look and scalars and vectors and different types of motion and the forces and calculations involved with these. The electricity section introduces the basics of electricity, current and voltage, before building on this to describe resistivity, current-voltage characteristics and the different components of a circuit.

Module 3: Core Content and Options

  • Further mechanics and thermal physics
  • Fields and their consequences
  • Nuclear physics

The core content of module 3 builds on the earlier mechanics content and introduces new types of motion including periodic, circular and simple harmonic motion. Thermal physics introduces the intricacies behind the transferal of energy between different substances, ideal gases and the model of molecular kinetic theory relating to Brownian motion. We then take a look at the different types of field and develop the ideas of gravitational, electrostatic and magnetic fields as unifying concepts throughout physics. We look at these fields in context considering planets, capacitors and electromagnetic induction. The module’s core content finishes by looking at radioactivity; the different types of radiation, radioactive decay and Rutherford’s “scattering” model.

Options:

  • Astrophysics
  • Medical physics
  • Engineering physics
  • Turning points in physics
  • Electronics

Module 3 finishes with a number of optional modules that look at physics in a more contextual way. Examples include how physics is applied in the study of the universe in the production and application of telescopes. There is also the option to look at medical physics; including the physics of sight and hearing as well as medical instrumentation. When students are entered for the module 3 paper, one of these options is selected for examination.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
