Units covered
- Unit 1 – Introduction to Medication - Our first unit will introduction different medications and what they may be used to treat. We will look at how medication can be taken and the process of getting prescriptions. We will also look at possible side effects and reactions, as well as the roles and responsibilities of people who administer medication.
- Unit 2 – Receiving, Storing and Disposing of Medication - This next unit will consider the factors to take into account when both storing and disposing of medication and how both of these should be carried out properly. It will also look at who might be at risk if medication is not properly stored and disposed of and why this might be the case.
- Unit 3 – The Rights and Support of Individuals when Managing and Using Medication - This unit will consider the importance of the rights of individuals who take medication and how they can be supported when they are using medication. The promotion of independence is a fundamental aspect of a person-centred approach to care and support, so any opportunity to enable an individual to manage their own medication should be taken, as long as they will not be put at risk.
- Unit 4 – Laws and Legislation - Our final unit considers the legislation for each of these areas and goes on to look at how policies are developed so that the procedures and standards that everyone works within are consistent and robust. We will look at examples of policies that care workers might come across and then finish off by looking at two case studies that show how legislation and policies are put into practice.
