COSHH Course Curriculum

Module 01: COSHH Explained
This course starts off with a bang, by explaining what COSHH is, and what it does and does not cover. You’ll even discover what the COSHH symbols are and why they are important for identifying hazardous substances. This is the module which looks at the different categories of hazardous substances that can be found in the workplace. It also focuses on where these substances can be found and what effects they can cause on human health.

Module 02: COSHH Regulations
Module two begins to bring our awareness to the finer details of the COSHH legislation and also introduces the learner into other legislation which influences or supports COSHH. This information includes details of COSHH ‘guidance notes’ and ‘Approved Code of Practice,’ which is the basic outline describing what an employer needs to do to comply with COSHH.

Module 03: Health Problems Related to Hazardous Substances
This is where we take a closer look at the short term, midterm and long term implications of the effects of hazardous substances, and how exactly, they can cause harm. We also show the learner what implications acute and chronic exposure brings and who is at risk.

Module 04: Identifying Hazardous Substances
This module really helps the learner to understand what substances can cause asthma, fire, dangerous environments and more. It also brings more detail and information on warning labels and introduces the learner into chemical safety data sheets.

Module 05: COSHH Risk Assessments
Module 5 is very focused on an important aspect of COSHH – the assessment processes. In this module, the learner will understand what COSHH assessments are and why they are necessary.

They’ll also learn step by step why each aspect of the assessment process is important and what considerations need to be made to complete the assessment adequately.

Module 06: Control Measures and Monitoring
As you will discover in module 6, control measures are sophisticated and require a lot of thought and continual monitoring and management of them. If a control measure fails, then the health of the employees is at risk. It’s a big deal.

Module 07: Implementing Control Measures
This is the last module in the COSHH training course, and it’s sort of like the icing on the top of the cake. It teaches the learner how to select, implement and maintain control measures. It also explains in more detail how to plan for emergencies and the reasons why health surveillance implementation might be something that employers may need to consider.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
