Overview

Everyone has heard the term COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health ) used to describe health and safety procedures. COSHH is the principal legal instrument setting out the responsibilities of employers concerning Health and Safety at work. It covers all kinds of workplaces, with most attention being given to those establishments with a risk of chemical substances being introduced into contact with people or where there are concentrations or quantities present that present a risk.

This COSHH course is designed to provide awareness of COSHH requirements for those who don't work in a workplace with hazardous chemicals or substances.

It is also suitable as a refresher course for those who have previously had some training on COSHH.

This Control of Substances Hazardous to Health course is aimed at all those whose work does not involve the use of hazardous substances, but the risk still exists that these substances could be brought into contact with employees.

Inspire London College designed this entire COSHH course to be both enjoyable and informative.

The COSHH course covers all the main health & safety topics for those working in industries where chemical substances are present.

The COSHH course is easy to follow, and each chapter contains an assessment test to assess the learner's understanding of the material covered.

The COSHH course covers:

  • An introduction to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and the content and principles of the regulations
  • Hazardous substances
  • Substances that can be hazardous but are not included in COSHH regulations
  • Good practice – ways to reduce the risk from hazardous substances at work
  • The risks from working with hazardous substances, such as fire or explosion, and chemical and physical hazards.

Health and Safety at work are essential to the non-intrusion of the workplace. Therefore, employers must be aware of what substances are hazardous to health. There are many different approaches that employers can take to control which substances are available in the workplace. This COSHH course will provide some examples of different approaches to be taken.

This COSHH course will identify some general steps an employer should take when considering implementing controls for hazardous substances. They include:

  • Being aware of potential hazards and considering what control options are available
  • Getting information from suppliers
  • Making a risk assessment
  • Implementing safety measures such as safety equipment, training, working practices, etc., may reduce risks before deciding upon a particular control option or approach.

By completing this COSHH course, you will know the full implications and stipulations of the COSHH Act and how to apply its principles. In addition, you will learn how to use the specified risk assessment methods and why they are used in this COSHH course. You will also understand how to carry out a thorough risk assessment.

In this COSHH course, the learner will discover:

  • A general approach to COSHH
  • Some general steps an employer should take when considering implementing controls for hazardous substances
  • How to use the specified risk assessment methods and why they are used in this COSHH course
  • How to carry out a thorough risk assessment in a real workplace environment

After COSHH training, there is also a COSHH assessment test through which you can test your knowledge of the material covered in this COSHH course. To complete the test and obtain a certificate of achievement, you must score 80% or higher.

Description

COSHH is a course that teaches you about the health risks of hazardous substances and how to manage them. It gives you information on everything from using substances safely to classifying hazardous substances according to their toxicity.

The COSHH course aims to educate people about hazardous materials and give them the tools to avoid accidents. It was first developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in England but now includes resources for information on all European Union member states. The HSE website says that COSHH is "a world-leading course for people dealing with Health and Safety at work.

Module 1: Introducing COSHH

This first module introduces the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and gives you some key information on how these regulations apply.

Our goal in this module is to introduce COSHH, the main legal framework for managing hazardous substances in the workplace. Understanding COSHH is important because it will help you be more engaged when it comes time to make safety recommendations or plan safety inspections during your work activities.

Module 2: Different Types of Hazard

In this second module, we'll get into the act of hazardous substances. First, we'll learn more about the control of hazardous substances to health (COSHH) and what this means for all companies, large or small. Also, we will be looking at some different types of COSHH (and their definitions), including the control, storage, and use standards for things like asbestos, solvents, and benzene.

Module 3: Different Types of Exposure

The third module focuses on the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and the process of Classifying Chemicals Dangerous for the Environment. This module defines COSHH and covers:

  • The role of control in protecting human health and the environment
  • The principles behind classification schemes
  • The prominence of chemical regulation schemes in controlling dangerous substances.

Module 4: Regulations and Approved Labelling

The fourth module covers the control of substances hazardous to health and the approved labelling. Finally, there is a whole chapter on the requirements for the information provided on labels and safety data sheets, including an introduction to classification, labelling, and packaging.

This module has been divided into three sections: COSHH in general; Approved labelling, including Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and Classification; Labeling requirements, including labelling information to be given on labels.

Module 5: Assessing COSHH Risks

The fifth module explains how to assess the risks of substances hazardous to health. After identifying where risks may be arising, an assessment needs to be made about what can be done to control these risks. The module covers three possible situations:

  • Substances are used in harmful quantities but are not identified as being hazardous;
  • Substances are used in harmful quantities and are identified as being hazardous;
  • Substances are used in small amounts, but chemicals that react with them have been hazardous.

Module 6: The Risk Assessment in Practice

In this sixth module, we will take a look at the risk assessment in practice. The main topics covered are:

  • Identifying hazards and risks
  • The hierarchy of control
  • Determining the level of control needed to protect your employees, contractors, visitors, and others who may be affected
  • Implementing controls necessary to reduce or eliminate risk arising from hazardous substances

Module 7: Exposure Control

The seventh module explains how to work to reduce the risk from hazardous substances present in the workplace. To do this, you need to know what substances could be harmful to you and your colleagues. There is a list of these in this module. The next part of this module looks at how substances can affect people and lists several symptoms workers may have when exposed to hazardous substances.

Module 8: Exposure Control - II

The eighth module further extends your knowledge on Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

Briefly, in this module, you will learn about protective clothing, workstation hygiene, personal hygiene, and the use of chemical protective gloves. More specifically, you will learn how to identify hazardous properties of chemicals and how they react with themselves and other substances. You'll also be able to recognise signs of hazardous exposure.

Module 9: Staying in Control

In this 9 module, you'll be able to learn about the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and how hazardous substances can affect you. It's important to be aware that these hazards do not pose a threat to you or your workplace. This course will help make sure your knowledge about Control of Substances Hazardous to Health is up-to-date!

Module 10: Training and Emergency Planning

The tenth module elaborates on the occupational health and safety law of substances hazardous to health, also known as COSHH. This module establishes how employers should manage occupational diseases and diseases of public concern such as asthma, allergies, and eczema.

Module 11: Course Summary

This last module summarises the Health and Safety course as a whole. With information on what you should do now, the exam and how the course can help you.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
