Description

You’ve likely heard of herbs being used in the treatment of humans but possibly not in animals. However, through the study of zoopharmacognosy, animals have been known to seemingly self-medicate by ingesting or topically applying plants and natural substances. With our expanded knowledge of herbs and their medicinal uses, we can support animals with numerous ailments and conditions.

By taking the Herbalism for Animals Diploma Course, you’ll be immersed in the fascinating world of herbal remedies for animals. You’ll learn how to use herbs safely and effectively and understand animal ailments and how you can support them with the appropriate herbs.

The course begins with an exploration of the use of herbs to treat animal ailments. We’ll consider zoopharmacognosy, how some vets use herbal remedies and the legalities of treating animals with herbs.

You’ll learn about the therapeutic properties of herbs and the active constituents that produce them, gain a foundation of knowledge of the mechanisms underlying herbal healing and explore the holistic approach traditionally used in herb selection. We’ll also look at the safe dosing of herbs for animals and how to make herbal preparations that are appropriate for animal use.

With this foundational knowledge in place, the course guides you through using herbs to address specific health issues. You’ll start by learning the herbal approach to various common animal mental health issues, including separation anxiety and behavioural issues.

It’s then onto physical health, beginning with a look at digestive health and effective herbal strategies for issues such as constipation and diarrhoea, dysbiosis and intestinal parasites. We’ll explore the respiratory system, covering issues of the eyes, mouth, nose and lungs— infectious and chronic concerns. You’ll find out why herbs are used both externally and internally for skin problems and how to manage a range of skin complaints.

We’ll discuss the endocrine system and how to safely support issues such as diabetes, thyroid complaints and pancreatitis, and even how to use herbs to support a pregnant pet. We’ll also consider both the cardiovascular and immune systems – learning how to manage cardiovascular complaints and how tonic herbs can be used to strengthen and support the cardiovascular and the immune systems.

The course takes a focused look at how to aid ageing animals – giving you advice on supporting geriatric joints (and issues such as arthritis), digestive aid, and how to support an animal during cancer and end-of-life care.

The course concludes with a detailed look into a range of herbs that are essential to your herbal animal care kit. You’ll get to know the therapeutic actions and key uses of each herb, how to prepare and use them, and how to use local wild plants as herbal remedies.

By studying this course, you will:

  • Understand how herbs can be used to address health issues in animals
  • Be familiar with the therapeutic properties of herbs
  • Learn how to treat the specific health issues of animals
  • Know how to support an animal through pregnancy and old age
  • Be able to create herbal health kit full of essential herbs
