Overview

Prevent Duty focuses on crimes that may not be imminent, but if left unchecked, could lead to potential danger in the future.

Terrorist attacks are more likely to occur during moments of heightened security for a variety of reasons. A terrorist attack is an act of violence intended to create as much fear as possible, and this goal can be achieved most effectively when authorities are on high alert. When police forces and other law enforcement officials are directing their attention away from everyday crimes, criminals become emboldened by the lack of police presence.

In an era of unprecedented globalisation, Britons can be reassured that the Government is doing all it can to prevent foreign nationals from committing a terrorist attack on British soil. The Prevent Strategy was introduced in 2007 to confront extremists by working with schools, community groups and other organisations at risk of radicalisation.

Experience tells us that the threat comes not just from foreign nationals but terrorists born and bred in Britain. Therefore, our counter-terrorism strategy must contain a plan to prevent radicalisation and stop would-be terrorists from committing mass murder. The Prevent strategy, published by the Government, is part of the overall counter-terrorism strategy.

What does Prevent Duty course offer?

This Prevent Duty course aims to equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviours to enable you to understand the signs of radicalisation among individuals or groups, to identify what might motivate or encourage extremism, and how you can respond appropriately.

The Prevent Duty course starts with an overview of the Government's Prevent strategy and explains why people become extremists. Next, it covers the objectives of the Prevent strategy, how to base your actions on a risk-based approach, what to do if you are concerned, and much more.

Prevent Duty is about intervening early before individuals or groups become involved in terrorism. Prevent Duty focuses on the possible causes of terrorism, from extremism to being disillusioned with society. However, it has been criticised for being too broad and vague, inaccurate, and wrongly associating peaceful Muslim organisations with terrorism.

Prevent Duty tackles all forms of terrorism, including threats from right-wing extremism and those who may be vulnerable to radicalisation or are already involved in terrorist networks. Prevent Duty course also looks at the risk of people setting up home-grown terrorist cells (often known as "lone wolves") and strengthening communities' resilience to attempts by organised extremist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda to recruit members. Prevent Duty is not about political correctness but about confronting diverse issues that can lead some people down a path towards violent extremism.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
