Overview

This qualification has been developed in response to the Every Child Matters: Change for Children agenda.

A child may be defined as a young person between the stages of infancy and youth. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) defines a child as an individual aged 0 to 18 years old, but within British Criminal law, a child is considered any person up to the age of 14, although they can be convicted of an offence from the age of 10. A young person may be defined as someone in the first or an early stage of life, growth or development or more specifically an individual between the ages of 14-19. It is important to note that a person’s development depends on a number of genetic and environmental factors and where these are affected in a negative way, so will the young person’s development.

Description

Although Safeguarding has not been given a specific definition in law, it may be considered in its simplest form as ‘keeping children safe from harm, such as illness, abuse or injury.’ Following the implementation of the Every Child Matters agenda, the term ‘Child Protection’ has been replaced by ‘Safeguarding’ and is the responsibility of all professionals who work with children and young people. All professionals i.e. professional careers, parenting workers and care assistants, now have a duty of care to the children and young people they work with and are expected to protect a child’s emotional, physical and sexual well-being as well as to ensure the child is not being neglected.

A child or young person may be harmed in many different ways and it is not always obvious to the outsider as to what is happening in a young person’s life or if they are safe or being harmed.

Children and young people can be harmed by a number of different factors:

• People
• Environment
• Health Issues
• Accidents
• Injuries

Assessment

To be awarded the QLS Level 2 Award in Safeguarding Children and Young People, you must complete all three mandatory units. By successfully answering all of the activities and questions in the workbook, you will achieve certification for this qualification.

Certification

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Quality Licence Scheme and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the Quality Licence Scheme. This means that NCC Home Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at QLS Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

The Quality Licence Scheme is part of the Skills and Education Group, a charitable organisation that unites education and skills-orientated organisations that share similar values and objectives. With more than 100 years of collective experience, the Skills and Education Group’s strategic partnerships create opportunities to inform, influence and represent the wider education and skills sector.

The Skills and Education Group’s knowledge and experience of working within the awarding sector enables them to work with training providers, through the Quality Licence Scheme, to help them develop high-quality courses and/or training programmes for the non-regulated market.

*Regulated qualification refers to those qualifications that are regulated by Ofqual / CCEA / Qualification Wales

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
