The Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties course aims to build on your understanding of speech, language and communication difficulties within education, and help you to understand current legislation and how this relates to educational settings in England. The course will raise awareness of some of the common types of SLC difficulties which you may come across in schools.

The course is suitable for anyone working within an educational setting. All educational provisions should be focusing on inclusion of pupils with SLC Difficulties and this course will enable understanding of a variety of SLC difficulties. The course includes historical aspects relating to speech, language and communication and provides a fascinating insight into how provision and attitudes have changed over the last 40 years or so.

There are assessments at the end of each module which you will need to complete. These are marked by a tutor who will give you written feedback on your assessments and who will also give you support.

These may involve multiple-choice questions, questions to answer, research for you to carry out and discuss, and also activities that involve you discussing your thoughts on different matters.

Near the beginning of each module, you will be invited to jot down some notes on your knowledge and experience of the topic and to reflect on these again at the end of the module. In Module 1, for example, you are invited to note what you already know about the term ‘Speech, Language and Communication difficulties in Education’ and to look back at these notes at the end of the module.
