Course Content

This course assesses the following units:

Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology – This unit will provide knowledge and understanding of the human body and its functions as the starting point of sports massage theory. The more we understand how the body functions, what may interrupt this functioning (such as trauma and injury), and what influence increased activity has on the systems that combine to make it function, the more the soft-tissue therapist can use their skills and knowledge to advise their clients.

Unit 2: Understanding sports massage – Sports massage is a type of massage that involves the manipulation of soft tissue to help people who participate in regular physical exercise. The term ‘soft tissue’ refers to the connective tissue that has not yet solidified into bone and cartilage. It includes the skin, tendons, muscles and ligaments. Repetitive and intense physical activity and injury can lead to soft tissue imbalances and injuries that can be treated with sports massage. The use of sports massage before and after exercise helps improve performance, speed up recovery and reduce the risk of injury.

Unit 3: Contraindications and injury – This chapter provides all the knowledge and understanding you need to differentiate between different soft tissue injuries to help you stay within your scope of practice when working with clients. The term ‘contraindications’ refers to medical issues that may be made worse using massage therapy. This protects the patient against worsening symptoms and avoids the severity of their injury or condition. This chapter will teach you about different types of contraindications and modifications to massage.

Unit 4: Client assessment and consultation – This chapter will cover the knowledge and understanding you need as a sports massage therapist to carry out your professional and legal responsibilities to your clients. This chapter will discuss the initial consultation process, including the value of client history and record-keeping, how and what to communicate with the client, and the physical examination.

Unit 5: Massage techniques – This chapter describes the various sports massage techniques and demonstrates how palpatory skills can be used. It also considers factors such as the therapist’s posture, the position of the hands for each method, and performing the correct movement to provide the most benefit for the client. Giving massage is very therapeutic, and once you start, it’s easy to focus on your client. Maintaining fitness for massage, especially over extended periods of time, requires the proper equipment, posture and techniques.

Unit 6: Practical application – This chapter explains how the responsibilities of the massage therapist may not end with just the practical applications on the massage couch. In conjunction with athletic trainers, coaches and medical professionals, the massage therapist will often implement warm-up, cool-down and stretching programmes. The post-massage advice given by the soft-tissue therapist is essential to the athlete in maintaining and improving their ability to perform sporting and everyday activities.

This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

To pass this course learners must pass 6 assignments. These are completed after navigating through the corresponding lessons and writing your answers to assignment questions. FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
