Description
On completion of the course, students will gain an understanding of youth mental health and why awareness is important. Students will explore the common mental health challenges young people may experience and the myths and stigma surrounding youth mental health and the impact this has on young peoples lives.
We will examine the signs and symptoms of poor mental health and mental health conditions. Students will learn about the risk factors that increase the likelihood of a young person experiencing poor mental health or developing a mental health condition.
Students will be provided with guidance on how to provide immediate support to a young person or child experiencing poor mental health or a mental health crisis.
We will cover self care and building resilience and community based resources and more formal support services that can help with children and young peoples mental health
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.
Units covered
- Unit 1 - Understanding Youth Mental Health First Aid - In the first unit we will cover the definitions of mental health and some of the indicators of good and poor mental health. Students will explore the most common types of mental health conditions experienced by children and young people and their prevalence.
- Unit 2 - Recognising Signs and Symptoms - In the this unit we will look in more detail at risk factors that increase the likelihood of young people developing a mental health condition. We will cover the role of puberty and adolescence in a young persons life and its impact on their mental health.
- Unit 3 - Providing Initial Support - In the third unit we focus on the meaning of mental health first aid and its benefits. Students will learn how to implement the five steps, how to assess the risk and the steps to take if there is an immediate risk to safety or a safeguarding concern. we will also cover active listening with a case study of how ALGEE can be applied in practice.
- Unit 4 - Self-Care and Support Resources - In the final unit we look at self-care for those supporting young people with mental health difficulties. We will focus on self care strategies and ways of building resilience. We also look at the importance of safe and supportive environments for children and the resources available.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for anyone who wants to gain more of an understanding of youth mental health, how to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health problems and how to provide mental health first aid to young people and further support.
Requirements
You are required to complete a 30 question multiple choice quiz at the end of the course. Where you need to achieve at least 80% or above to pass. You can complete the quiz as many times as you need to pass.
