Description

Described as the ability of animals to self-medicate and maintain good health through the selection and use of plants and natural substances, zoopharmacognosy is a fascinating subject that will provide you with a newfound respect for the intelligence of animals and the therapeutic abundance within the plant kingdom and natural world.

In this introduction to zoopharmacognosy, you’ll learn about the history of animal observation, the key figures in this scientific field, and the potential applications of the observations of zoopharmacognosy.

We’ll look at the therapeutic active constituents within plants and how animals use their sense of smell and taste to spot them in plants. We’ll explore the difference between the consumption of food and the consumption of therapeutic plants, the toxic compounds within plants that form part of an animal’s diet, and how they have adapted to deal with them. We’ll also consider why animals become poisoned both in the wild and when under the care of humans and how they use the phenomenon of geophagy to counter poisons and toxins.

You’ll discover the plant compounds that help animals deal with infections and the strategies employed by animals to avoid and treat parasites. We’ll look at the topical applications used within the animal kingdom and their ingenious use of insect repellents. The course even considers psychotropic plants, their mind-altering active constituents, and the theories behind why animals consume such plants.

In addition to learning the theory, you’ll also learn about the practice of applied zoopharmacognosy. The course covers legal and safety issues and the circumstances where this therapy can be used. You will explore a wide range of remedies by studying herbs, essential oils, carrier oils and other remedies by body systems. You will also learn about remedies that can be used to treat behavioural issues.

We’ll take a closer look at how an applied zoopharmacognosy experience can be curated for cats, dogs, and even horses – expanding on your remedy knowledge and methods of remedy application.

By studying this course, you will:

  • Understand zoopharmacognosy and its importance
  • Be aware of the various ways animals self-medicate and how they do this
  • Gain knowledge of natural remedies and their uses

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
