Silsoe Spray Applications Unit (SSAU) is an internationally recognized research and development facility located in Silsoe, Bedfordshire. We specialize in the characterization of sprays and spray behaviour through field experiments, laboratory work, and use of a specialized wind tunnel. Our team of experts has extensive experience in spray generation, transport, and deposition.

We are currently looking for an analytical chemist with an eagerness to learn and develop to join our team.

Role Description

This is a full-time role that will involve contributing to both lab and field-based experiments to capture airborne and deposited material, and the extraction and quantification of deposits from a wide range of substrates. The primary duties for this role are to:

  • Support the senior research scientist in the analytical laboratory, with a view to working independently once fully competent
  • Assist in developing new protocols, validation, and problem solving
  • Assist in wind tunnel trials as required
  • Assist in field trials as required
  • Develop the skills required for QM and UKAS activities
  • Assist in the implementation of HSE health and safety requirements
  • Assist in the management of chemical storage compliance
  • Develop the skills required for preparing client reports

The candidate will also be expected to contribute towards quality accreditation, health and safety, and general housekeeping activities.

Whilst knowledge of spray application and behaviour is an advantage, it is by no means a requirement as training will be provided. We therefore encourage applications from anyone with a good knowledge of analytical chemistry and a willingness to learn.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biochemical, or environmental science, or equivalent experience
  • Operational knowledge of a range of analytical biochemical techniques
  • Ability to solve problems, develop new methods, and validate approaches
  • Clear, concise communication skills, including formal written reports, laboratory records, verbal and written communications with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, multidisciplinary team
  • Competent in the use of productivity suites e.g. Excel, Word etc.
  • Well organised, with the ability to work to deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail

Desirable

  • Some post-graduate or industry experience, ideally including a component of research and development
  • Knowledge of aseptic microbiological techniques
  • Operational knowledge of spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry
  • Knowledge and/or experience in mass spectrometry and/or HPLC may be beneficial, but is not essential
  • Knowledge of sprays or spray application either in an agricultural setting or otherwise would be of benefit, but is not required as training will be provided
  • Awareness of quality management systems (GLP or UKAS)
  • Ability to carry out health & safety risk assessments
  • NPTC Pesticide mixing and application (PA) qualifications would be beneficial, but training will be provided
  • A driving license would be beneficial

Pay & Benefits:

  • £27,000 - £34,000 per annum
  • 37 hours per week
  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Free onsite parking
