The Organisation

We are Little Valley Animal Shelter, an independent RSPCA Branch dedicated to helping Devon’s animals in need, regardless of their age, species or behaviour.

We aim to promote animal welfare and prevent cruelty to animals by all lawful means. We do this by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming mistreated, abandoned and unwanted animals. We also provide advice and, when necessary, financial support to pet owners.

Through the thoughtful application of our finite resources, we strive to create a community where people value animals and treat them with the respect and kindness they deserve.

We are now looking for an Animal Shelter Manager to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis, working 42 hours per week.

The Role

As an Animal Shelter Manager, you will oversee the optimal smooth running of our shelter in Exeter.

Ensuring our shelter is operating at its best, you will be involved in all aspects of its management from recruiting and training volunteers to promoting our work in the community and, of course, championing animal welfare.

You’ll drive rehoming efforts and ensure exceptional standards of care for dogs, cats and the small animals under our care, including working with our vets to make sure they are healthy.

Working alongside our CEO, you’ll also be involved in senior level decision making and the management of our estate and admin, strategies and development opportunities.

Additionally, you will:

- Oversee animal intake and care
- Oversee daily routines, health checks, and behavioural support for our animals
- Ensure our shelter is welcoming and safe for both animals and visitors
- Engage with the public, and foster a community of supporters
- Undertake maintenance and budget management responsibilities
- Gain support, volunteers and donations

About You

To be considered as an Animal Shelter Manager, you will need:

- In-depth knowledge of animal welfare and experience of delivering relevant animal welfare programmes, or demonstrable transferable skills
- Managerial experience, including motivational and development skills
- Experience of relevant Key Performance Indicators and performance evaluation and reporting
- Strategic levels skills with experience of developing long-term plans based on knowledge, insights and analysis
- Excellent communication skills
- To be educated to degree level or have relevant lived experience
