We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a Community & Educational Interpreter with proficiency in BSL/English to join our Deaf Access team. The role involves providing interpreting services for Deaf customers and students within education, business, medical, and community settings across Derby, Derbyshire, and surrounding areas.

Day to Day of the role:
  • Undertake interpreter bookings within the College and externally in the local community and surrounding area.
  • Assist with the booking process via telephone & email and provide completed documentation for invoicing.
  • Share specialist knowledge and expertise with other support staff.
  • Attend training events & meetings to review and publicise the service.
  • Maintain and develop interpreting skills, knowledge & experience.
  • Apply for NRCPD registration annually and log CPD to maintain registration.
  • Work flexible hours Monday-Friday to meet the needs of the service, including travel.
  • Collaborate with a team of multi-skilled Inclusion and Support staff to identify and support students.
  • Liaise with curriculum staff and create individualised support plans for learners.
  • Provide support as identified in assessments and directed by teaching staff.
  • Support the tracking and review of support for designated learners.
  • Complete detailed records of the support given.
  • Attend curriculum and Inclusion meetings and report on the progress of supported learners.
  • Assist the Inclusion Team in the gathering of information for audit.
  • Undertake personal care if required.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the NRCPD Code of Ethics for Sign Language Interpreters.
  • Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and discrimination legislation.
  • Awareness of current approaches and research around deafness and specific learning difficulties/disabilities.
  • Level 4/6 BSL qualification.
  • Level 6 Interpreter training (to meet NRCPD requirements).
  • Level 2 Maths and Level 3 English (to meet NRCPD requirements).
Desirable:
  • Experience in various interpreting settings, including education, business, and medical.
  • Experience working in an FE environment and supporting deaf learners.
  • Knowledge of SEND reforms and the Social Model of Disability.
