New permanent vacancy: CNC Miller Programmer Setter Operator

I met with the Director of a small sub-contract precision engineering business this morning. He’s looking to hire a CNC Miller Programmer Setter Operator, someone who knows their stuff, to join the small team of six skilled machinists.
A friendly chap, the director made me feel very welcome and, in amongst talking about how well the business is doing and discussing the strong relationships they have with their customers, he shared what might be attractive to someone who’s considering joining the company.

‘We’re a bit like working for a small family business really’, he said, ‘although nobody’s related!’. He explained that with only six machinists and two people in the office, machinists here are trusted to get on with their work. The company is happy to buy in good machines and to buy in any tooling which is needed for everyone to be able to do their best work. The director shared that he enjoys buying in good quality tooling – it makes it easier to produce high quality work for his customers and their emphasis is firmly on quality, not on speed or volume.

Working from an air-conditioned machine shop with 7 multi-axis lathes and 5 multi-axis mills, the work being carried out is mostly one-offs and smaller batches of up to five to ten pieces. There are very occasionally larger batches, but the company prefers smaller batches as a rule.

The machines you’ll be working on have a Fanuc control panel. They’re three axis vertical mills and they’re well maintained. You’ll be working on a small cell of three VMCs, working alongside one colleague who’s described as being a friendly chap, and a good machinist.

The work you’ll be carrying out is very varied, supplying to a wide variety of industries including scientific, research, defence and similar. Machined components tend to be high end stuff, made from stainless steels and exotic materials like super duplex, they try to avoid titanium and Inconel where they can!

The director explained that they work in a relaxed environment where everyone’s trusted to get their work done without someone constantly breathing down their neck. If help is needed, the director is a machinist himself and there is enough expertise in the business to work through engineering challenges together, but each person is encouraged to produce their own work in their own time, with the biggest focus being on quality rather than speed.

Working hours are flexible. Most of the team come in for 6:30am and finish around 2:30 but the workshop is open between 6:30am and 5:30pm Monday to Thursday, and 6:30am and lunchtime on Fridays, with most people leaving at about 11:30 on Fridays.

As the new member of the team, your duties as CNC Miller Programmer Setter Operator will include:
  • Programming, setting and operating 3 axis CNC vertical mills
  • Machining components to drawings
  • Working to tolerances of +/- 0.025mm (or one thou in old money)
  • Checking your own work

Essential Skills and Competences:
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Able to program, set and operate 3 axis CNC vertical mills from scratch to produce high quality components
  • Able to work under your own initiative
  • Comfortable using manual measuring equipment to check your work
  • Able to work well individually and with a team
