New permanent vacancy: CNC Turner Setter Operator (apprentice trained or similar)

What a nice surprise this visit was. Driving through the Oxfordshire countryside, past the odd country pub, avoiding a few cyclists on the way (is this a favourite place for riding a bike? The local café seemed full of cyclists!), I wasn’t sure what to expect when I was invited to meet the owner of a small sub-contract precision engineering firm on the outskirts of Swindon.
The outside of the building is fairly unassuming, although the smart glass-fronted entrance way and framed F1 stars’ signatures on the walls in the entrance lobby (Lewis Hamilton’s amongst others) suggested there might be something special coming up. I noted a few nice cars parked outside in the employees’ car park too…

I was welcomed in by the friendly business owner who took me straight through to the machine shop and that’s where I took a step back. What a tidy place! Bright and clean, with a good layout giving a feeling of openness and space, this machine shop is clearly well taken care of. I found a mix of new CNC mills and lathes alongside some slightly older, well-maintained machines in what looks to be a place where the team takes a pride in what they do.

The Director shared that he and the small team of fourteen skilled engineers focus on the quality of the work they’re doing. They work with customers in the motor racing field as well as supplying precision engineered parts to the science, research and even cryogenic industries, machining to tolerances of 6-8 microns, so getting the finish just right is important.

‘We’re looking to take on a new machinist’ he went on to explain. Someone who has perhaps not long passed their apprenticeship and they’re looking to progress, or someone with a few years’ CNC turning experience under their belt with a good grounding as an engineer. We’ll take them under our wing, show them the ropes and they’ll be well placed to progress in their career with us.’

As the new member of the team, your duties as CNC Turner Setter Operator will include:
  • Setting and operating standard single spindle, single turret CNC lathes
  • Setting and operating single spindle, single turret CNC lathes with Y-axis capabilities
  • Machining components to drawings
  • Working to tolerances of 6-8 microns
  • Checking your own work

Essential Skills and Competences:
  • Able to set and operate CNC lathes
  • Able to use standard measuring equipment
  • Able to work under your own initiative
  • Able to work well individually and with a team.
