Do you enjoy being hands on with historic objects whilst managing collection databases?


If so, this is a fantastic opportunity for you to hone your inventorying and data management skills. 


Only acquired in 2009, Lacock Abbey is home to the largest and most varied collection in the National Trust. You'll be working closely with the Collections Team to inventory our exciting objects, make discoveries and help build knowledge as we work towards Museums Accreditation and re-display.

We're looking to recruit a full time (37.5 hours per week) role, for the period of 12 months. 

The interview date will be on Wednesday 31 July 2024 at Lacock Abbey

This role is not suitable for remote working.

Visitors flock to this quirky 13th century abbey to enjoy the museum dedicated to photographic pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot. Outdoor theatre, photography exhibitions and family trails are among the innovative events run by the 40 staff members and local volunteers, making for a lively and fun visitor experience.

What you'll be doing

This opportunity is based on the Collections Officer role, but will focus on delivering inventorying and inventory management, following the Trust's collection management procedures. 


As Collections Officer, you'll be working closely alongside our Collections & House Officer, and volunteers as part of a process to carry out:

  • Inventorying of objects onto our CMS database, prioritising significant objects, creating new records and correcting existing ones identified through the Location Auditing process.
  • Conservation safe labelling and marking of objects.
  • Identification of photography.
  • Packing of collections for long and short term storage.


You’ll work on and off the visitor route. You'll routinely engage with the public and volunteers in person, through articles and via social media. You'll create excitement about the work you're doing and the fantastic objects we care for.

Who we're looking for
  • Experience of using Collections Management Systems. 
  • An awareness of collections management procedures and Museum Accreditation standards. 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including strong attention to detail. 
  • The ability to multi-task, prioritise work and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Competent IT skills (Microsoft Office). 
  • Good time management skills. 
  • Experience of handling collection items.
