The Role

United Utilities are seeking a Principal Commissioning Engineer to spearhead a dynamic team, driving the execution of a diverse range of projects. This pivotal role demands a visionary leader who can develop and direct a skilled commissioning team, ensuring the successful realisation of our strategic goals in the North West of England.

As Principal Commissioning Engineer you will operate as a subject matter expert (SME) for commissioning, managing and developing a regional team of Commissioning Engineers ensuring UU develops internal commissioning capability in line with business requirements.

You will formulate and oversee a commissioning strategy and policy tailored to the regional context, as well as efficiently allocating resources. Monitoring performance against strategic goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) is crucial, with findings reported to the commissioning manager to inform decision-making. Providing technical expertise is another key aspect, ensuring that commissioning processes are executed with precision and in accordance with industry standards. Managing risks and constraints within the regional program is essential to mitigate potential issues.

Effective stakeholder liaison at the regional level fosters a collaborative environment, while ensuring coordination and cooperation among employees, contractors, and external entities is vital for seamless work execution, auditing, and reporting. These responsibilities collectively ensure that the commissioning objectives align with the overarching goals of the organisation.

You can choose to work from our main sites close to Warrington, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston and Kendal, or from any of our other hubs across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria. In-person attendance is required three days per week to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, alongside some travel to other sites in the North West and flexible hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure compliance with H&S legislation and best practices in all commissioning activities
  • Provide strategic regional delivery of commissioning and standardization processes
  • Offer technical mentorship within the commissioning team and foster a collaborative environment
