A leading SME charity in London is seeking Deputy Chief Executive to join their established team on a 100% remote basis. This is a new role, reporting to the Chief Executive, and will be initially on a one-year FTC with the view to becoming permanent. The successful candidate will have experience with Board Administration, Governance, and Compliance & Regulation. 

Work duties for the role of Deputy Chief Executive will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support the Chief Executive in overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day management of the Charity.
  • Assist the Chief Executive in preparing and implementing a strategic plan and annual budget for approval by the Board of Trustees.
  • Act as Line Manager to the Director of Conservation Programmes, Media & Communications Manager, Development & Fundraising Manager, Finance & Operations Manager, Relationship Manager, Global Database Manager, and the Education Manager.
  • Administer the Board meetings including arranging meeting timetables and preparing agendas.
  • Be the main contact with the Charity Commission.
  • Write the narrative for the Annual Report and submit the Annual Trustee Return to the Charity Commission.
  • Support the Chief Executive to ensure that the Human Resources function is efficient and managed correctly. 
  • Manage the employee lifecycle, including the administration of advertising various roles, interviewing candidates, selection process, completion of recruitment documentation, obtaining references, coordinating Inductions, probationary periods, and exit interviews.
  • Develop the diverse skills and experience within the department, to ensure that the knowledge, skills and experience of the team is maximised. This should include mentoring and coaching support for team members.  
  • Review and suggest amendments to Contracts and Agreements between charity and others providing a service when it is appropriate for the charity.
  • Ensure that the charity’s systems, procedures and controls adequately reflect best practice and always comply with regulation, to monitor them and to recommend and put new procedures into practice as appropriate.
  • Administer and monitor the Charity’s Risk Register.
  • Ensure management and HR policies are up-to-date and regularly review working practices and improve existing policies and systems where required to improve efficiency.
  • Act as Company Secretary for the Charity.
  • Manage amendments to the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant charity policies and procedures and assist the CEO in ensuring the charity’s compliance with relevant legal, statutory and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Maintain awareness of risks and changes in the external environment that affect the organisation.
  • Work closely with other members of senior management and the Board of Trustees to ensure the efficient running of the charity, ensuring all personnel are focused on achieving its mission and aims and that legal, statutory and regulatory responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Working with other members of the Core Operations team, to promote the growth of the organisation.
  • Supply regular reports to the Board of Trustees and attend Trustee meetings as required.
