Are you passionate about ensuring safety and compliance in housing? We are looking for a dynamic Housing Safety and Compliance Officer to join our team and contribute to our mission of maintaining high standards of public health and safety in housing.

Role Overview

As part of our Behind Every Door Initiative, you will play a crucial role in ensuring landlord compliance with gas and electrical safety certificates. This role is ideal for a customer-focused individual with a background in service delivery logistics and landlord compliance, though this is not essential. You will be a team player with excellent communication skills, confident in suggesting improvements and engaging in all aspects of landlord compliance, tenant safety, and customer service administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the delivery of a resident-centric Housing Safety and Landlord Compliance Service.
  • Coordinate the Behind Every Door Initiative, facilitating access to properties for safety checks and preventing no-access incidents and overdue compliance actions.
  • Coordinate overdue safety and service appointments to ensure statutory and regulatory standards are maintained.
  • Work with Environmental Health Officers, Housing Officers, Housing Management, Social Services, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance through mutual consent or legal routes, including the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Coordinate specialist compliance contractors and Housing Health & Safety Ratings Systems Inspections to deliver comprehensive safety services.
  • Support compliance and safety service leads, monitoring and reporting on agreed KPIs.
  • Input data and maintain a rolling programme of activities as a live document.
  • Assist with audits to ensure building compliance across the housing stock.
  • Report non-compliance issues to your line manager and other relevant managers.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by your line manager.

What We Expect This Role to Achieve

  • Ensure the no-access protocol is maintained at all times.
  • Provide measurable and tracked progress on no-access properties.
  • Act as a key link between heads of service, housing, environmental, and contractor colleagues.
  • Proactively identify public risks, educate others on the impact of their actions, and use enforcement powers when necessary.
  • Deliver a positive approach to compliance, helping businesses and individuals meet regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to businesses, residents, and visitors to maintain high levels of public health and reduce inequalities.
  • Perform statutory duties, including inspection regimes and reporting.
  • Offer qualified advice in environmental health to support risk resolution and informed decision-making.
  • Liaise effectively within and outside the council to consult on plans, share best practices, and champion public health improvements.
  • Undertake project-based work to enhance environmental health policies and procedures.
  • Stay updated with ongoing training and professional development, sharing knowledge to improve public health.

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in handling public complaints and delivering customer-facing services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships and deescalating conflicts.
  • Ability to explain complex regulations clearly and effectively.
  • Good written communication skills for accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to assess risks and make informed decisions quickly.
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
