Financial Controller - An exciting opportunity to join a builders merchant in a BRAND NEW role!

Location: Kilburn, NW6 7JR

Salary: £65,000 - £70,000 (depending on experience)

Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am-5:00pm (37.5 hours per week)

The Role of Financial Controller

This family owned builders merchant are expanding and looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join their team in this brand new role! You’ll support the Head of Finance, lead a team of 10 (including Purchase Ledger and a finance apprentice), and work across the wider business to improve reporting, systems, and processes.

This is a people-focused role where strong communication, leadership, and system knowledge will make a big impact.

What you’ll do as the Financial Controller:

Team & People

  • Support and mentor the Finance and Purchase Ledger teams
  • Help develop individual team members through coaching and guidance
  • Offer day-to-day support and assist with annual appraisals
  • Work cross-functionally — especially with Branch Managers — to improve financial understanding and share key reports
  • Build strong working relationships across departments (credit control, payroll, HR, etc.)

Accounts & Projects

Assist with group accounts, monthly forecasts, and reconciliations

Oversee cash management, VAT, intercompany balances, and budgets

Support audits and HMRC queries

Help assess potential new projects and track construction spend

Champion the implementation of their new finance system (Intact), making sure the team is trained and that they get the most out of its functionality

Identify ways to improve systems and lead projects that drive efficiency

Reporting & Insight

Deliver key financial and performance reports to senior leadership

Develop and share KPIs and dashboards to support decision making

Ensure timely and accurate reporting to external stakeholders (banks, insurers, etc.)

Translate complex data into clear insights for non-finance colleagues

What they're looking for in a Financial Controller:

  • A qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) or QBE
  • Strong leadership and mentoring experience
  • Excellent communication skills — able to support your team and also collaborate confidently with colleagues across the business
  • A natural with systems and processes — ideally someone excited to be the "go-to" expert for their new finance system
  • Detail-focused, analytical, and proactive
  • Comfortable working in a busy, fast-growing environment
  • Experience in construction, property, or merchant industries is a bonus
