Head of Public Appointments
28 February by The Guardian

Are you looking for a fast-paced and high-profile role, working closely with our partners across the department, Ministers’ Private Offices, and No. 10? If so, then this could be the role for you!

About the Team

The Public Appointments Team is a new team, managed by the Head of Public Appointments and Corporate Governance, that has drawn together roles and responsibilities that previously sat across HM Treasury (HMT).

We provide a centre of expertise on public appointments within the Treasury and guide the process for all of the appointments that the Treasury is responsible for, which includes some of the most high-profile roles with huge national significance.

About the Job

In this role, you will:

  • Effectively leading the team to deliver agreed priorities and objectives, ensuring they’re supported in both their work and their personal development.
  • Ensure effective and high-quality campaigns are run at pace across all public appointments for which HMT is responsible. Navigating complex and, at times, delicately balanced partner relationships, proactively managing competing priorities, working collaboratively and to tight deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain close relationships both within HMT and with our key partners including Cabinet Office, No.10, appointments teams in other Government Departments and the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
  • Deliver an efficient service that produces high-quality, diverse public appointees who add the best value to the Boards and Committees of the arm’s length bodies for which HMT is responsible, and to the government as a whole.
  • Apply and interpret the Governance Code from the planning stages to Ministerial agreement of appointees; taking the initiative to identify risks and provide solutions.

This is a high-profile role, operating in a high-pressure environment. We are looking for someone resilient with the ability to deliver at pace. This is a stretching role working with many teams across HMT and establishing a brand-new system for the handling of HMT public appointments.

About You

This would suit someone with strong leadership and management skills, who is able to support and motivate a team who are working under pressure whilst remaining calm to provide clear direction and advice. You should be able to build, deliver and adapt complex processes to ensure high quality and timely outputs that comply with regulatory and governance standards. You will also be able to confidently persuade and negotiate with senior partners, leading challenging conversations and maintaining positive and trusted relationships. Experience of navigating governance or public appointments processes in a large organisation and an understanding of their importance is crucial.
