Position: Healthcare Assistant

Organisation: NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)

Location: Reading

Salary: £12.45 per hour

They’ll train you to test whether someone can give blood, perform venepuncture (using needles to take blood), update records, use automated blood donation machines and give basic clinical advice and aftercare.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Keep the reception area clean and organized, ensuring a positive experience for all.
  • Offer administrative support to various teams, including calendar management, meeting arrangements, and assistance with general office tasks.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and efficient service delivery.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing mail and packages, ensuring proper distribution and record-keeping.
  • Keep accurate records and databases, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
  • Working on a shift basis but they will let you know in advance which days and hours you’ll be working.
  • The normal hours for this role are up to 8.5 hours a day. The earliest start time could be 07:00 and if on a late shift you would be finishing at 21:00.
  • Weekend and bank holiday working will be required. You can expect to work some long hours, but you won’t be working more than five days a week or even the same days each week.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with individuals at all levels.
  • Strong orientation towards customer service, with a friendly and approachable demeanour.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite and email applications.
  • Outstanding organisational skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping and administrative tasks.
