Job Title: Highways Inspector

Location: East Midlands

Contract Type: Interim/ongoing

Salary: £30-£37 per hour Inside IR35 (Negotiable DOE)

Our client, a local authority in the East Midlands, is seeking an experienced Interim Highways Inspector. The successful candidate will undertake both highway safety and streetworks inspections, ensuring all routine and cyclic inspections of the highway network are carried out to identify defects. This role involves ensuring that all works and inspections comply with the Highways Act 1980 and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Section 58 highway-related inspections (both walked and driven) to identify defects that pose risks to highway users, following the Council's inspection programme.
  • Raise works orders as needed and liaise with contractors to ensure timely remedial work.
  • Produce comprehensive written reports post-inspection, documenting all relevant factors and updating back-office system records.
  • Investigate reports and complaints of highway defects, including drainage, and take appropriate action, ensuring back-office systems are updated.
  • Monitor gully cleansing drainage operations and related programmes of work.
  • Plan and manage the annual patching programme, including carriageway surface dressing, resurfacing, and marking.
  • Inspect works carried out by utility companies, contractors, and other third parties on the highway network to ensure compliance with standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Accredited Highways Inspector Qualification OR Streetworks Accreditation OR equivalent experience.
  • NRSWA Supervisor Qualification.
  • Thorough understanding of Health and Safety legislation/requirements related to highways and streetworks inspection.
  • Working knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act and associated regulations and codes of practice.
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of highway construction materials and techniques.
