Homeless Officer
  • Hourly Rate: £15.43 PAYE or £19.03 via Umbrella 
  • Location: Wakefield
  • Job Type: Full-time, 37 hours per week, Mon-Fri

My client, a leading public sector organisation, are seeking a dedicated Homeless Officer to join their team, providing homeless prevention, assessment, and decision-making services to those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The role is crucial in undertaking casework to identify and address housing-related problems and to prepare reports for decision-making on the Council’s duty to each household.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Work as part of a duty team to ensure comprehensive assessment of circumstances for homeless or potentially homeless individuals.
  • Clearly explain the homeless application process, including detailed enquiries, potential outcomes, and implications of the assessment.
  • Manage difficult and challenging situations professionally and safely.
  • Interview homeless applicants, gather relevant information, and obtain permission to make third-party enquiries when necessary.
  • Prevent or delay homelessness by negotiating with housing providers to facilitate the applicant’s return to or relocation to suitable accommodation.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and update work-based systems.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Personal resilience when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Highly organised with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Ability to work both within a team and independently.
  • Good knowledge of homeless prevention techniques, strategies, and legislation.
  • Experience in social housing or a housing-related support environment.
  • Proficient in interviewing members of the public and liaising with other organisations.
  • Experience in managing a caseload and conducting support needs and risk assessments for vulnerable clients.
