This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to work with a leading consultancy on new concept automotive and marine electrical systems.

Suitable profiles could include (but not limited to) previous experience and leadership in:

  • Electric, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Vehicle Design
  • Low Voltage Electrical Vessel Powertrain Design
  • Electric Powertrain Integration
  • Energy Storage Systems
  • Vehicle Management Systems

Please note, this position is biased towards electrical engineering of vehicle systems rather than mechanical engineering

Job Duties:

  • Deliver technical content of client projects in the areas of marine and automotive systems electrification
  • Develop electrical architectures for bespoke client projects with multiple complex power systems and drivetrains
  • Lead detailed electrical design tasks for main EDS components such as; wiring schematics, harnesses, power distribution & protection modules.
  • Engineering sign-off for calculations for vehicle systems up to 1kV.
  • Lead communication network development with knowledge of CAN, LIN, flexray, etc.
  • Electrical design integration of electrification systems from prototype through to full series production on client hybrid and electric vehicle projects
  • Customer facing role in medium to large electrical integration projects for a range of vehicle applications, directly interfacing with clients on technical issues
  • Working as part of the client engineering team at any one of the offices and occasionally at the client site
  • Liaise with suppliers/subcontractors to agree the specification of purchased components and delivery requirements for ongoing projects
  • Lead 8D and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on prototype and pre-production vehicles
  • Ownership of electrical DFMEA and it's flow into requirements and design validation plans
  • Develop and implement test plans for electric vehicle testing and validation
  • Support power electronics and e-machine development teams with electrical technical input
  • Provide electrical knowledge, mentoring and design support to the wider electrification teams.
  • Work to client quality procedures and validation processes
  • Support the development of future products and services
  • Support business development activities and proposals with technical input

Required Qualifications and Experience:

The successful applicant will have a sound engineering background, in a marine or automotive field, and a number of years of experience of successfully delivering projects either in an OEM or Tier 1 capacity

  • Minimum of a degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline (e.g. electrical and electronic engineering/mechanical engineering/physics/computer science/software engineering/maths/control engineering)
  • Significant experience in an EDS role developing complex vehicle systems
  • Excellent knowledge of energy management strategies
  • Excellent knowledge of vehicle system architecture design considerations
  • Experience with 2D and 3D cable harnesses and routing using commercial cable design packages
  • Good knowledge of automotive legislation requirements, including ISO26262
  • Knowledge of designing automotive high current and high voltage (12 to 1200Vdc) automotive power systems, (connectors, bus bars, cables, contactors & fusing, insulation requirements)
  • Practical experience of harness installation and bug fixing on vehicle
  • Experience of high voltage (up to 1200Vdc) electrical component integration, design & development on production products, particularly HV & LV systems and sub systems in a tier 1 or OEM environment
  • Experience of design & development for production of low or high volume products particularly mixed HV systems and sub systems in a tier 1 or OEM environment.
  • Experience in compliance engineering to external standards, such as battery handling, EMC, vehicle safety, functional safety ISO26262 etc
  • Considerable experience of vehicle based communication systems
  • Experienced in delivering DFMEA for electric vehicle systems
  • Drive and commitment to deliver technically challenging projects
  • Able to be flexible on work location and prepared to travel within the UK and internationally on short assignments.
  • An understanding of project delivery approaches
  • Good interpersonal and client facing skills
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and demonstrate attention to detail in a design environment
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, oral communication, and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

It would be beneficial, but not essential if the applicant had some experience or knowledge in any of the following fields:

  • Experience of HV componet design, such as eMachines, inverters, DC-DC converters and chargers
  • Experience in battery and fuel cell systems
  • Hands on experience of Arcadia or CATIA EDS
  • Analytical approach to developing controls algorithms in an automotive environment
  • Experience in a model-based development languages such as Matlab/Simulink
  • Familiar with laboratory & field development & test equipment
  • Experience in DFMEA for Electrical components
  • Hands on experience of working with HV systems (>60V)
  • Familiar with product delivery process from requirements capture through to design validation of hybrid and electric vehicle battery systems
  • High Voltage safety training
  • Please note this is an electrical engineering position not a detailed electronics design position although electronics design knowledge would be a welcome addition
