Lecturer in Public Services

Location: Middlesbrough

Salary: Up to £41,874 Per Annum

Hours: Monday - Friday, 37 hours per week

Annual Leave: 30 Per Annum plus statutory Bank Holidays

Pension: NEST Pension Scheme

Job Purpose: The Sport, Travel and Public Services (STPS) department is a large and dynamic curriculum team within our clients College curriculum. The department consists of three vocationally based sub-departments: Sport & Exercise, Travel and Aviation and Public Services. Each sub-department prides itself on preparing students for their next steps in their career journey, whether that is the next level within Further Education, progression into Higher Education or progression into employment. The Department uses a range of methods to help achieve this goal; the department holds a range of staff who are either currently, or have previously been, employed in their respective industries, utilises innovative teaching and learning strategies and boasts a range of industry grade resources, to engage students in their studies, collaborates with a range of local employers, to ensure the curriculum is current and covers essential skills for the students chosen future career pathway.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of all students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is developmentally appropriate to the maturity and interests of all students.
  • Employ a variety of teaching techniques and resources consistent with best practices, specific content knowledge, the physical limitations of the space provided, and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Plan and deliver a suitable Assessment Programme ensuring marked work meets the College’s Gold Standards.
  • Implement the College’s Core Values through the Gold Standard of Teaching and Learning.
  • Utilise diagnostic assessment tools to identify learning strengths and needs of every student, on a regular basis, for the purpose of intervention and/or acceleration toward academic achievement.
  • Participate in Interval Verification requirements including the preparation for Awarding Body visits.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to assure safety in the classroom and the College for all students.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by Middlesbrough College and any statutory regulators including but not limited to Awarding Bodies, Funding Bodies and / or Government Departments.
  • Implement all College policies and procedures governing student life and conduct.
  • Make provision for being available to students and / or to their parents for education-related purposes outside of the teaching day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Maintain and improve professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Actively participate in all professional development opportunities including relevant industrial updating.

Requirements

  • To be a qualified Teacher or willing to work towards.
  • To hold a relevant Degree, or equivalent.
  • GCSEs at Grade C / Level 4 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent.
  • Current knowledge and / or experience of teaching in one or more fields of Public Services.
  • Current knowledge of potential issues in Public Services that may impact on curriculum delivery.
  • Current knowledge and / or experience of career opportunities in Public Services for 16 - 18 and 19+ learners.
  • Evidence of disseminating good practice effectively.
  • The ability to deal promptly and effectively with inappropriate behaviour in the classroom.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to prepare written and visual teaching materials including the effective use of Information Learning Technology, eg Virtual Learning Environment, Power-Point supported by key software.
