About our Client

Our client will be stepping into her first year at University of Bath Spa from September. She has cerebral palsy and is a full-time wheelchair user. She is looking for a team of positive care assistants to support her daily living. Our client enjoys being creative, the cinema and reading. She likes to keep active physically and enjoys yoga and swimming. She also uses a disabled cross-trainer.

As written by her…

"I am going to study Film, Television and Digital Production at Bath Spa University in September. I have only one functional hand and leg (right), and because I have a brain injury, I can forget more easily so may need reminders or for my PA to manage tasks for me.I can be distracted (variable concentration), find planning and organising tricky, can experience extreme fatigue and take some time to process information and emotions. I struggle with uncertainty and don’t like change, so I benefit from routine. My emotions can come quickly and strongly so I need people around me to be calm and steady. I need support with problem solving, decision-making and may need decisions broken down. I can only really single-task.

I will need help with getting around (such as opening doors and carrying things etc), some personal care such as dressing (including putting on my splints) and cooking, and house-keeping such as cleaning and ironing. I will need physical help with my course such as moving cameras and equipment either in the studio or outdoors. I will also require academic support such as note-taking, liaising with staff, typing, checking comprehension, and advocating for and communicating my needs.

My accommodation is a private studio flat with an accessible kitchen and wet room. There is also a small study area. The sleeping arrangement for my PA will be staying upstairs and sharing a kitchen and bathroom with three other students.

I would like someone who is interested in similar things to me e.g. reading, video and card/board games, watching movies and going to the cinema, theatre (the arts), music events, being creative, getting outdoors, museums etc. I need someone who is patient. I have not had a lot of experience going out, so I’d like support exploring this.

I need someone with confidence to advocate for me in group work and pass on messages to my teachers if I don't want to talk to them directly or I am feeling unwell and have to leave or cannot make a lesson.

I enjoy taking regular exercise. My favourite is swimming, and I plan to swim three times per week (I need PA support with this). At first, I will probably need someone to get in the pool with me until I feel confident in the environment. I also like yoga. I will also have access to a local community physiotherapist, who will advise on a personalised physio programme. At university, I will have my own Innowalk (a disabled cross trainer) which I will require support to access.

I enjoy cooking and am used to freshly prepared food made from scratch. I like to cook myself but need support with elements and will have adapted equipment to enable my independence (as much as possible)"
