Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in mechanical design with a strong emphasis on hand calculations, as well as a working knowledge of welding techniques, fabrication processes, and structural/mechanical engineering principles. This role involves producing practical and efficient designs for custom mechanical components and assemblies used in a wide range of infrastructure applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies, from concept through to production
- Perform hand calculations (stress analysis, bolted/welded joint strength, load assessments, etc.) to verify design integrity
- Prepare and review technical drawings, models, and documentation using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
- Liaise with the fabrication team to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet welding/fabrication standards
- Apply relevant British and international standards to design and calculations
- Provide technical support to project managers, fabricators, and installation teams
- Ensure all work complies with company quality, safety, and environmental standards
Requirements
- Qualified in Mechanical Engineering
- Proven experience in mechanical design engineering
- Strong competence in manual hand calculations for structural and mechanical components
- Solid understanding of welding principles, weld design, and fabrication processes (e.g., machining, cutting, assembly)
- Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
- Good knowledge of materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing methods
- Familiarity with BS, EN, and ISO design codes and standards
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desirable
- Experience in infrastructure or construction engineering projects
- Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation)
- CSCS card or willingness to obtain one
