About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Support Technician or Mechanical Technician within the Diamond Insertion Device (ID) group. Synchrotron IDs are permanent magnet assemblies which lie at the heart of the Diamond facility, generating the brilliant light that is used in experiments.

You will contribute to the mechanical assembly, testing, installation, maintenance and upgrading of IDs.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out inspection of manufactured items to drawings.
  • Carrying out machining to drawings, design jigs and fixtures and manufacture where necessary.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and upgrading of existing IDs.
  • Carrying out general laboratory/workshop work as required.

Some flexibility over working hours will be required during periods of intense activity, and occasional local travel may be required.

About You

Candidates should demonstrate a combination of technical experience, as well as an engineering apprenticeship, ONC or equivalent level qualification within engineering (for consideration at the Technician level).

You should have an aptitude for practical mechanical work, with familiarity with measuring instruments, alignment methods and machining experience beneficial. The ability to understand and interpret mechanical drawings is required at Technician level.

You should also have precision mechanical assembly skills, or an interest in learning these skills.

At Technician level experience would also be beneficial in one of the following environments:

  • cryogenics
  • permanent magnets
  • high pressures
  • ultra-high vacuum

You will demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, to interact with people at all levels.
