Overview: 

First Military Recruitment are currently seeking a Maintenance Engineer on behalf of one of our clients. 


Our client encourages applications from ex-military personnel however all candidates will be given due consideration.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure that there are zero RIDDOR accidents by driving and promoting a health and safety culture to create a safe and risk free working environment. 
  • Responsible for continuously reviewing systems of work within the team ensuring that safest procedures are in place.  
  • To attend weekly health and safety meetings with Engineering Team, reporting findings to Health and Safety Manger.  
  • Thoroughly investigate any H&S accidents / incidents identifying actions that can be put in place to prevent reoccurrence.  
  • Ensure all general risk assessments, manual handling risk assessments and COSHH assessments are in place for all activities that are carried out and are reviewed annually or immediately to a change within the working area.  
  • Conduct regular health, safety and environment audits and action any failings. 
  • Encourage team members to actively raise and close out hazards and near misses.  
  • Responsible for following all safety requirements when working on machinery.  
  • Ensure all team members are safe - ensure your work is not putting others at risk.  
  • Ensure flexible working practises by developing personal and team skills.  
  • Mentor new starters to integrate them into the team in a timely manner.  
  • Work with Production Teams to develop their basic understanding of machine set ups and changeovers and basic machine maintenance.  
  • Contributing to the achievement of a world class manufacturing quality and food safety through quality system compliance and adherence.  
  • Promote and maintain right first time (RFT) for repairs and maintenance. 
  • Implement and maintain robust hygiene and cleaning procedures for all plant and equipment.  
  • Complete monthly self audits against the Technical Team standards, ensuring that all documentation is compliant, and a robust traceability system is in place of all maintenance repairs.  
  • Undertake root cause analysis (RCA) into any equipment failure, reporting to Engineering and the Manufacturing Manager on the findings and any corrective and preventative actions that have been put in place.  
  • Responsible for following all hygiene and environmental requirements when working on machinery.  
  • To work as a team to deliver the weekly work load . 
  • Ensure that colleagues have the skills and knowledge to undertake effective maintenance of their equipment. 
  • Investigate any trend or continuing problems with equipment . 
  • Champion the use of continuous improvement (CI) techniques to resolve work flow issues.  
  • Ensure that operation to agreed budgetary controls across Engineering and that data is used effectively to drive down the cost of downtime.  
  • Monitor review and action wastage and materials usage to minimise losses.  
  • To liaise with Engineering Stores Administrator to get the right part at the right price and on time.  
  • To ensure that the Engineering Stores Administrator has a list of critical spares.  
  • To liaise with Engineering Manager and Head of Packaging to carryout installations of new machinery and any planned downtime to reduce costs.  
  • To always work in a professional manner, carrying out the duties outlined. All employees will comply with the Management System Documentation as required by the Quality Management Systems Standard (QMS) - ISO9001, British Retail Consortium Global Food Standard, Soil Standard ISO 14001 and any other standards/legal requirements pertinent to the role.  
  • To undertake training as and when required in order to enhance skills within the position.  
  • To perform any other duties within their capability.  
  • To uphold the highest standards of brand integrity by ensuring that all actions, communications, and deliverables align with the company's vision, values and ethical guidelines.  

Skills and Qualifications:  

  • Trained in electrical / mechanical engineering (minimum level 3 N.V.Q. or equivalent qualification). 
  • Experience in electrical/ mechanical engineering.  
  • Effective communication skills.  
  • Interaction with other departments.  
  • To be able to work on your own initiative or in a team.  
  • To be able to work touch screen controls on machines.  
  • Ability to problem solve.  
  • Flexible in both working hours and tasks. May involve shifts.  
  • Weekend working / working outside normal working hours may be required to deal with breakdowns. 

Desirable: 

  • Previous food industry experience on bottling lines would be preferred but not essential. 
  • To work collectively and individually to improve production lines performance.  
  • Experience of within FMCG environment preferred but not essential. 
  • Experienced with site services e.g. chillers, compressors, steam systems etc.  
  • Experienced with ink jet coders.  
  • 17th / 18th edition Wiring regs.
