Outreach Learning Support Assistant
Role Overview:
As an Outreach Learning Support Assistant, you will provide dedicated 1:1 support for a young man with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and high anxiety. Described as quiet but determined, he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community with a strong interest in horses, animal welfare, digital art, and Japanese anime. He is very bright and knowledgeable, able to engage in reciprocal conversations about topics of interest with familiar individuals. The role involves supporting him during twilight/later sessions, as he struggles with morning routines. Ideally, this position will cover sessions on Monday and Tuesday.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide personalised 1:1 support tailored to the student's needs during home sessions, community outings, and other settings.
- Assist in developing and implementing individualised learning and support plans.
- Foster a supportive environment to help manage high anxiety and support the student's engagement.
- Facilitate conversations and interactions based on the student's interests, such as horses, animal welfare, digital art, and Japanese anime.
- Support the student during twilight/later sessions, accommodating his struggles with morning routines.
- Monitor and report on the student's progress and behaviour.
- Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and external agencies to ensure cohesive support for the student.
- Facilitate communication between the college, the student, and their family.
- Assist with the preparation and adaptation of learning materials to suit the student's interests and needs.
- Participate in training and professional development to stay current with best practices in supporting students with special needs.
Requirements:
- Experience working with students with ASD, high anxiety, or other special educational needs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Flexibility to accommodate twilight/later session needs.
- Proactive and supportive approach to student engagement and learning.
- Understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and sensitivity to diverse needs.
- Relevant qualifications in education or support work are desirable.
