We’re working with a highly respected, nationwide not-for-profit organisation currently looking to bring a detail-oriented Payroll Officer into their team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with payroll experience who enjoys working in a mission-driven environment. You’ll be supporting the payroll function from start to finish, ensuring all employees and associated workers are paid accurately and on time.

This role offers a hybrid working model, requiring one day a week in the office, along with a competitive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of full-cycle payroll processing, including new starters, leavers, pay changes, and variance reports.
  • Administer payrolls for approximately 7,000+ individuals across the UK.
  • Handle out-of-cycle payments, salary advances, overpayment recoveries, and death-in-service claims.
  • Liaise with third-party organisations such as HMRC, pension providers, and other external bodies to ensure timely and accurate payment processing.
  • Respond promptly to queries via phone, email, and digital platforms, maintaining a high standard of customer service.
  • Work within agreed processes to maintain internal controls and audit readiness.
  • Support audit activities and ensure all documentation is current and accurate.
  • Manage payroll deadlines proactively, including issuing reminders and follow-ups as needed.
  • Help track and report on service KPIs, and contribute ideas for improving processes and systems.
  • Participate in system testing and UAT for upgrades or enhancements.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Confident working with numbers and performing calculations.
  • Solid IT skills with fast and precise data entry capabilities.
  • Professional and friendly communication style - both written and verbal.
  • Well-organised, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proactive, flexible, and collaborative attitude - a real team player.

Experience Required

  • Hands-on experience in a payroll role using digital payroll systems.
  • Comfortable working with a large and diverse workforce.
  • Familiar with standard UK payroll legislation and practices.
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Payroll qualification (Level 3 Certificate in Payroll or similar).
  • Familiarity with Payroll software’s, ideally Oracle HCM Cloud.
  • Understanding of payroll practices in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
