Job Purpose

PS Policies and Governance Specialist
1 year fixed term contract
Potters Bar, London, Bristol or Isle of Man

This is a key role within Canada Life People Strategy, Design & Governance. This role will lead the development and implementation of market leading people policies, ensuring they are future fit and aligned to CLUK’s diversity, employee proposition and cultural ambitions bringing together colleagues from across the organisation to modernise the policy suite across CLUK and Isle of Man.

The role holder will also provide support to the PS Governance Partner, and the People Strategy function, and all people related regulatory and risk requirement.

What you'll do:

  • The role will benchmark current policies against market practice to drive forward looking and ambitious people policies, partnering with colleagues and People Services to educate colleagues on good employment practices.
  • Lead on the development of people related policies for the UK business, develop
  • new policies where necessary or update existing policies into the new "look and feel" and to reflect
  • changing employment practices for both our UK mainland and Isle of Man entities.
  • Providing support for SM&CR related tasks which may include producing MI, composing assessments for the initial and annual Fit & Proper attestation processes, supporting the delivery of training, and any maintenance of existing processes and guidance documents/registers.
  • Supporting the GDPR obligations for the function, including segregating data for Stored IQ Reports, ensuring colleagues have taken the appropriate action; assisting in updating the existing Record of Processing Activities and Record Retention Departmental Guides, and supporting the delivery of training to the People Strategy team.
  • Supporting the PS Governance Partner and broader PS function (where required) to ensure that all risk events and breaches are recorded in a timely manner / raised to the relevant key stakeholders and completing the relevant documents in support of this.
  • Helping to draft process notes for the PS team and producing any additional documentation to
  • support documenting roles and responsibilities in processes i.e. process maps, RACIs, etc, and
  • helping to maintain these / update when necessary.
  • Issuing letters for the Code Staff population and updating the existing lists and methodologies for any
  • starters, leavers and movers.
  • Providing support and guidance to the wider PS team on ad-hoc queries in relation to governance, policy and standards as they arise, including people related mandatory learning.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Experience of building people policies and a good understanding of the employment legislation associated with people policies. Making the complex simple and ensuring that all our policies ensure colleagues fully understand the policies and their obligations within them
  • Numerate to be able to understand and calculate the financial impact of policy changes
  • Understanding of employment legislation in the UK and Isle of Man that apply when developing or updating existing policy documentation
  • Commercially minded and an understanding of the financial impacts of policies and procedures
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements including SM&CR and Solvency II Remuneration requirements
  • Intermediate excel user with strong IT skills to be able to track and manage policy priorities
  • Commercial and customer orientated to be able to deliver great policy solutions for the company and its employees and to understand the impact on the business of policy solutions to develop talent and create opportunity. Ability to react to employees’ questions with patience, discretion, and understanding.
  • Strong organisational skills to be able to organise and juggle numerous legislative and procedural issues at any given time.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure compliance with legislation as errors could result in compliance breaches and costly penalties for Canada Life and impact the employee experience.
  • Ability to be flexible with the constantly changing international landscape with compliance requirements, business needs, and a range of peripheral political factors leading to changes impacting policies at very short notice.
  • An understanding of risk management processes and requirements
  • Ideally educated to degree level or equivalent experience in the industry
  • Membership of the CIPD would be an advantage
