Job Description
As a Principal Database Engineer at Deriv, you'll be stepping into a key leadership role. You'll shape the direction of our database administration, ensuring our technological approaches are both innovative and relevant. You'll be guiding high-impact projects to fruition, collaborating with management, and developing strategic roadmaps that align with Deriv's business goals.

As part of our Productions Operations team, your expertise will directly influence the performance and reliability of our online trading platform. With a focus on database scalability, security, and performance, you'll work closely with product developers and other teams. You'll ensure the seamless flow and robust security of information on our platforms, catering to high traffic volumes and demanding operational needs.

Your challenges

  • Tackle a fast-paced, technically demanding environment, showing initiative and taking charge of resolving Deriv's most intricate challenges.
  • Work closely with the database engineers and other cross-functional squads to implement important initiatives, such as migrating our database clusters to Kubernetes, evaluating database architecture, or exploring new data platforms.
  • Explore and assess the evolving database and tech landscape, ensuring Deriv remains at the forefront of fintech innovation.
  • Drive improvements in database management to meet rising demands in volume, performance, security, and availability, keeping our platforms optimised and ahead of challenges.
  • Investigate and integrate new data platforms, ensuring they align with our growth trajectory and technical aspirations.
  • Act as a mentor and guide to team members, helping their growth and strengthening the collective capabilities of your team.

Requirements
  • 15+ years of recent experience as a database engineer or DBA, with PostgreSQL, SQL, PL/pgSQL, or similar technologies
  • University degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Extensive experience working with large, distributed, high-performance, high-availability databases with 24/7 uptime
  • Software development knowledge of at least one low-level language, like C or C++
  • Knowledge of Linux, Shell Scripting, and AWS/GCP
  • Ability to travel occasionally to office locations across the globe
  • Excellent spoken and written English communication skills

What's good to have

  • Work experience in the fintech and/or trading organisations
  • Experience with DevOps automation tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes, database CI/CD tools and their implementation, SQL Server, MySQL, and Redis
