Your new company
Somerset Council is a unitary authority, governing the district of Somerset in the Southwest of England. A dynamic vision puts the people of Somerset at the heart of what we do, a council who will be there for residents whenever needed. As a newly formed council, there is an opportunity to harness the vision by bringing together experience, expertise, assets, and networks from five predecessor councils, creating a stronger position to advocate for Somerset on regional, national, and international platforms.

This is your opportunity to help build a fairer, greener, resilient, more flourishing Somerset.

Your new role

You will join an experienced and passionate existing team of property professionals who are responsible for the management of a wide range of properties, which include leisure centres, depots, offices, and commercial estates. You will lead on landlord and tenant matters and case work for a wide range of council property, both leased in by the council and leased out to third parties and partner organisations.
As part of your role, you will also:

  • Undertake lease renewals, rent reviews, and review new leases, to maximise yield and required outcomes from the council's asset base.
  • Negotiate terms for new leases, renewals, or disposals, particularly higher value and more complex transactions.
  • Maintain an effective case management system and lease data to ensure asset records are up-to-date.
  • Instruct and manage the work or external valuers and solicitors.
  • Analyse and evaluate market trends, building condition, and other information to develop recommendations and options for asset reviews.

What you'll need to succeed
Applicants from all backgrounds, demographics, and career stages will be considered for this exciting new opportunity. To succeed in this position, you should meet the following criteria as best possible. Please schedule an exploratory conversation to discuss or gain clarity where required:

  • A strong and up-to-date knowledge of property and landlord & tenant law.
  • An MRICS or FRICS qualification.
  • Ability to support and mentor a trainee surveyor.
  • The ability to work in partnership with multiple stakeholders.

You will need to be comfortable working autonomously where required, as well as within a team environment, meeting regularly in Somerset based offices.

What you'll get in return
A role with Somerset Council will offer a wide range of career-enhancing and personal employment benefits.

  • Opportunity to access market leading training and support from chartered property professionals, which can include assistance with APC or professional development.
  • Access to the LGPS pension scheme - https://
  • A formal flexible working arrangement, which includes the opportunity to focus on key role deliverables in a way which works for you and your family.
