Quals: ideally but not critical: degree / ACCA / ACA / CIMAwho has proven team management skills, can manage audit, finance and provide oversight and be responsible for extra functions unique to this organisation.

We are looking for:

  • Fully qualified accountant (CIPFA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA)
  • Significant accounting systems experience and knowledge - Access Dimensions, Sage Payroll, CRM database implementation
  • At least five years’ track record of successful management of finance teams covering all core aspects of finance operations and reporting
  • Experience of managing finances in a membership organisation (desirable)
  • Evidence of senior managerial skills and/or management training; ability to negotiate with and persuade others not in direct line of report; used to working in partnership with internal stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written, ability to communicate financial concepts and information to lay people in a manner which is easily understood and without use of jargon
  • Flexible attitude towards work. A team player with a "can do" attitude and a passion for excellence
  • Personal strength to withstand professional challenge and argument with the ability to operate under pressure to resolve issues in a controlled and calm fashion
  • Willingness and ability to travel to other offices and locations in the UK as required, staying overnight if necessary

Role Responsibilities: (not limited to)

  • Business Planning and Finance Strategy - work with relevant officials, and across the organisation to prepare the wider Strategic Plan. Provide critical input and financial analysis and assist in guiding the Produce accurate management accounts on a timely basis including variance analysis and written monthly reports. Work with all budget holders to ensure effective management of departmental budgets
  • Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures.
  • Preparation of the budget, quarterly forecasts and medium-term strategy in compliance with internal guidelines and timescale.
  • Develop and prepare financial plans to ensure effectiveness and the long-term viability of the organisation.
  • Audit preparation and successful completion in accordance with applicable standards and manage the relationship with external auditors.
  • Complete the quarterly VAT returns and be the point of contact with HMRC
  • Lead on the maintenance of reporting systems, including cost centres, profit centres, hierarchies, and material matters to maintain one system of robust reporting framework.
  • Support the development of reporting tools used to drive functional Key Performance Indicators (KPI), aimed at maximising Union reporting performance.
  • Support colleagues in controlling and managing costs within budget, thereby ensuring optimum financial performance.
  • Manage the monthly payroll processing of staff and representatives, P11D, PAYE settlement and HMRC payroll related data, producing reports as required.
  • Explain complex financial information clearly and accurately to non-finance managers in order to drive financial KPIs and compliance across the union.
  • Provide full and effective leadership and line management of the staff in the Finance team, communicating a positive and achieving culture.
  • Manage and direct the membership function, ensuring that all membership data, reports, and information is accurate and dealt with in a timely and professional manner at all times.
  • Manage the relationship with the outsourced IT support provider
  • Undertake additional tasks (within reason and with prior discussion) when requested
