About the role

Coventry Building Society are expanding the Legal Risk function and require the expertise of a Senior Legal Counsel who will provide strategic advice and support on privacy matters to the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and liaise with external counsel as needed.

The role involves delivering expert, accurate, and cost-effective privacy legal advice to help the business manage data protection risks and will report into Managing Counsel, Data Protection.

Key responsibilities include providing expert advice and guidance on privacy issues to the DPO and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across various disciplines such as marketing, HR, and risk management, conducting horizon scanning of the privacy landscape and producing briefing notes for senior stakeholders, and overseeing high-risk projects and contracts, including supplier due diligence and risk assessments.
The role also supports Commercial Legal and Line 1 with contracts, Privacy Notices/T&Cs, DSARs, exemptions, and record retention.

Additionally, the Senior Legal Counsel will act as an ambassador for the DPO, Data Protection Office, and General Counsel function, and liaise with the ICO regulator on data breaches and seek guidance as required.

About you

To be successful in this role you will be a qualified lawyer and a subject matter expert in UK privacy and data protection law.

Strong leadership and knowledge sharing with the ability to manage stakeholder queries and engage external experts.

Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and internal policies.
Ability to deliver consistent, accurate, and timely advice, considering the Society's risk appetite
