Profile

Above all, as a professional Senior Ornithologist you must be a conscientious and reliable person, with an ability to pay attention to detail in all aspects of your work, including in relation to Health & Safety and biosecurity. Whilst being good company/team player, you will also need to be self-motivated and able to work individually at times, although you will always have mentoring support of senior colleagues and practical assistance from junior colleagues.

You will need to be someone who is able to apply their technical skills to real world situations and think around issues in a flexible manner to ensure that we offer the best possible advice and work in as cost-effective manner as possible, and entrain junior colleagues into this way of thinking. At the same time, it is important that you remain aware of the limitations in your own knowledge and that you are willing to take advantage of the support provided through your Line Manager and senior colleagues in a pro-active way, so that you can do any task correctly the first time.

As communication is key to an effective consultant, your written English must be excellent and you must also exhibit good verbal communication skills, especially when directing colleagues and sub-contractors working on projects for which you are the manager. Last, but not least, it is of key importance that you have a passion for your subject; be keen to develop within our chosen profession, and to assist others - both inside and increasingly outwith our profession - in understanding ecological and wider environmental issues.
