Senior Test Engineer - Defence

Permanent, salary: up to £60,000 depending on experience

Based on site in Bedford

40 hours a week (Mon to Fri, 08.00-16.30 or 08.30-17.00)

We’re looking for a Senior Test Engineer to join the Special Vehicles arm of a leading Automotive Test facility who validate, test and support military vehicles for UK MoD and OE manufacturers.

Whilst most of the time will be onsite in Bedford, working with the latest R&D technology you’ll also travel internationally to visit stakeholders and support testing (this could be up to 30% of the time) - so make sure your passport is to hand! Due to the sensitive nature of this Defence work, security clearance is required; you’ll need to be a UK Passport holder, resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

What would the Senior Test Engineer - Defence do?

  • Work within a team of engineers and technicians to co-ordinate and supervise test activity
  • Provide technical support to technicians and stakeholders
  • Develop test capabilities within the military vehicle subject area
  • Design new test techniques and put forward novel solutions to existing problems
  • Develop test scenarios with customers and other departments
  • Liaise with the customer and test authorities to ensure test plans meet specific requirements
  • Communicate requirements of test programs clearly to other staff and external agencies
  • Specify data capture needs in order to meet customer requirements
  • Report test results and anomalies to the stakeholders in a neat and timely manner
  • Make engineering judgements re performance of the customer vehicles and quality of data
  • Write test reports, and report the results and conclusions to customers
  • Conduct analysis, validate data & investigate sources of errors, resolve technical issues
  • Provide off-site support when required

What skills and experience will the Senior Test Engineer - Defence need?

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant Engineering discipline
  • Vehicle testing and general data acquisition understanding and ability
  • Knowledge of sensor types & applications, electronics + circuitry, vehicle mechanical systems
  • Sound engineering background, and confident when dealing directly with customers
  • Self-motivated and forward thinking with a right first-time attitude & willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of the standards and regulations required to support the military vehicle approval process - desirable
  • Flexibility to support test activity both off-site and outside of normal working hours
  • Full UK driving license & own transport (the site is not easily accessible via public transport)
