This role has a starting salary of £45,680 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week.

We are pleased to be hiring a new Senior Traffic Engineer, to join our Highways Engagement and Commissioning Team. The team is based out of Merrow Complex, Merrow Lane, Merrow, Guildford, Surrey GU4 7BQ, but we promote a hybrid approach to working, meeting collaboratively when required. We are a team that is customer focused and liaises closely with county councillors and the Highways Design Team identify, progress and deliver highway improvements through the Integrated Transport Scheme budget.

About the Team
The role sits within the Highways Engagement and Commissioning Team, which is part of the Highways Operations and Infrastructure Group in the Highways and Transport Service. The focus for the group is to provide excellent customer service for highways works, and this is embraced to ensure that county councillors and customers are at the heart of everything we do.

As part of the Highways Engagement and Commissioning team you will be responsible for providing technical advice to county councillors to help identify and progress highway improvements, such as new pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures, that are important to the local community.

In addition to this, the team works with key local stakeholders to better understand the needs of an area, which will influence the work of the various engineering teams. This is likely to be through focus groups, surveys or engagement events and research.

About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Traffic Engineer who will work alongside the Traffic Engineer and Stakeholder Engagement Officers to provide technical advice and guidance to a wide variety of key stakeholders, including county councillors, district/borough councillors, parish/town councils, residents associations and various other local community groups regarding highway improvements schemes.

In addition, you will work closely with county councillors to identify highway improvement schemes in their area, to put forward for funding from the Integrated Transport Scheme budget, and the county councillor's highways allocation. Once, these schemes are identified you will be the project manager for these schemes, working collaboratively with a number of teams to ensure their progress, as well as monitoring budgets and carrying out informal consultation with key stakeholders including, county councillors, residents and Surrey Police.

The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a detailed understand of how a highway authority operates and be experienced of both designing and delivering highway improvement works. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of representing the County Council in a number of situations, with a variety of audiences including the general public. Excellent customer service will be at the heart of everything you do and you will be proficient in prioritising limited resources to meet service objectives. We are looking for a highly motivated, solution focused person who can make a valuable contribution towards our traffic engineering team.

Shortlisting Criteria
To be shortlisted for interview, your CV and personal statement will clearly evidence:

  • Degree/HNC equivalent, or substantial relevant experience in a relevant area
  • Significant practical or professional experience supporting service teams and/or providing support to the public
  • Comprehensive understanding of subject matter, legislation, principles and practices relevant to the area
  • Proven ability to apply project management principles and techniques to manage a range of projects through to completion
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders and to understand, meet and exceed customer expectations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computerised business systems
  • Proven written and oral communication with the ability to influence and work in collaboration with others
  • Ability to manage workloads and deal with conflicting priorities
  • The role holder will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.
