Summary

We’re looking for a Senior Volunteering & Community Officer to join us in North Devon and help us to connect more of our local communities to the special places we care for.

With inspiring valleys, sandy beaches, towering cliffs, woodlands and moorland, North Devon provides a huge opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. You’ll be joining an ambitious Volunteering & Community team who work with local groups and partners to support more people to benefit from green spaces.

What it's like to work here

Across our places, we're working to create a more dynamic landscape and involve local people in these processes. This includes the planting of trees, encouraging species rich grassland and trailing techniques to slow water flows and reconnect watercourses. Projects are underway to develop new experiences and sites, including in the wider estate of Arlington, to provide new ways for people to experience nature, with boundless potential to support the wellbeing, skills, art, and craft interests of the local population.

We have a dedicated team of more than 250 volunteers supporting our work across heritage and climate: a knowledgeable and passionate network of local people from a range of backgrounds. Our work reaches and benefits our local communities in rural villages and hamlets, as well as the larger urban centres Barnstaple, Bideford and Ilfracombe.

What you'll be doing

With our communities and partner organisations, you’ll provide positive, flexible and inclusive opportunities for connection to nature and our conservation work. You’ll be working closely with different teams across several North Devon National Trust sites to develop and meet our strategic objectives, particularly our goal to end unequal access to nature and beauty.

You’ll bring in changes that support the National Trust’s ambition to be a fully inclusive organisation, and you'll help to widen and deepen our existing relationships. You’ll help to make this a great place to volunteer, while also reaching out to future volunteers and community partners to discover what they need from us.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • experienced in community engagement and involvement, as well as broader participation and working with partners
  • adept at introducing staff and volunteers to new approaches or products
  • an organised person with good planning skills
  • able to coach and support people, and used to managing, supervising and working alongside volunteers and community partners
  • a skilled communicator
