Sustainability Manager

£70,000 (plus bonus and car allowance)

We are working with a leading regional contractor in London and the South East, offers tailored construction solutions with a focus on collaboration and customer satisfaction. With zero debt and a turnover nearing £100 million, we reliably handle projects from £100,000 to £30 million.

They are seeking an experienced Sustainability Manager to join their team. You will be responsible for developing & implementing sustainability strategies across our projects & operations. This role requires a deep understanding of sustainability principles in construction, a collaborative approach & the ability to drive change within the organisation.

Key areas of responsibility:
A key area of growth & innovation, this hands on role will support head office & site teams to record data & manage information required to fulfil external accreditations (e.g. BREEAM) & our own environmental & carbon reporting. The role includes responsibility for:

  • Sustainability strategy: Develop & implement comprehensive sustainability strategies that align with company goals & industry best practices to achieve our Net Zero Carbon targets.
  • Compliance & reporting: Ensure compliance with relevant sustainability standards & regulations, including BREEAM, LEED & UK Building Regulations. Develop Carbon Reduction Plan targets, drive actions & record data. Prepare & submit sustainability reports as required.
  • Project integration: Work with Contracts Managers, buying & site teams to integrate sustainability practices into project planning, design, procurement & execution.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Collaborate with internal & external stakeholders, including clients, suppliers & regulatory bodies, to promote sustainability & ensure alignment with expectations.
  • Education & training: Develop & deliver sustainability training programs for employees & subcontractors to build awareness & encourage sustainable practices (e.g. toolbox talks / CPD).
  • Innovation & best practices: Stay updated on sustainability trends & innovations in the construction industry. Identify & implement best practices to enhance sustainability outcomes. Keep abreast of new technologies & maintain a library of sustainable products & specifications.
  • Resource management: Manage resources, such as energy, water & materials, to reduce waste & environmental impact - capturing data within SustainIQ & analysing performance metrics.
  • Social responsibility: Promote social sustainability by supporting community engagement & social value initiatives as part of a wider team.

Key skills:
We are looking for a team player with natural curiosity - someone who can use their initiative to undertake the multitude of tasks that support sustainability. The candidate should be comfortable taking individual responsibility for tasks in a supportive environment & have the following key skills & experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in sustainability, preferably in the construction industry. Experience with sustainability standards & certifications (e.g. BREEAM, SKA, LEED) is highly desirable.
  • Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Design experience, advanced degrees or certifications in sustainability are a plus.
  • Comfortable using a range of basic PC-based IT systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Teams etc). Experience using carbon modelling tools, such as One Click LCA, would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in both written & spoken language is crucial, as is attention to detail.
